It's actually not just the tires.

Seb gets on the gas several meters earlier than almost all the other drivers. That's why Lewis was complaining that he couldn't pass Hulkenberg either. They (Seb and Nico H) have both learned to work the Coanda effect to the maximum. They get on the throttle earlier than is normal to get the exhaust gases flowing over the back to give them more low speed downforce, which equates to being able to put the power down sooner - almost like having traction control. The other teams have variants of the blown diffuser but only a few drivers: Seb, Nico H, Kimi and Romain have mastered the application of it.

It's much like left foot braking in a turbo car to keep the turbo spooled up while you are slowing for a corner. It's absurdly counter-intuitive to apply throttle in the braking zone, but you have to, otherwise your turbo will bog down. Those who master it, are faster. Not all can adapt.

The big downside to using web streaming is you can't PVR it and watch it in the evening.

Reddit has a thread where Divx downloads of practice/quali/race are posted, but they are usually released a couple days after the event and still aren't the greatest in terms of video/sound quality. (I want my 1080 HD with 5.1 Surround sound!)

There are some talk/accusations of RBR having some sort of traction control linked to KERS (pretty smart if true). The car definitely sounds like it has traction control

Damn I was hoping for a VOD service next day or something.
I typically PVR races and watch them Sunday morning with a cup of coffee and scrambled eggs.

I know for a fact it's not traction control in the traditional sense. The ECU is incapable of limiting throttle based on a wheel speed delta or anything else. The ECUs are all sealed units supplied by McLaren and can not be modified. The scrutineers would see it instantly.

What CAN be changed is the engine fuel mapping. What I and others think RBR is doing, is changing the fuel mapping and valve overlap/timing at lower RPMs to induce far more exhaust gases and a significant reduction in available torque. That is a probable explanation for the stuttering sounds under accelleration This way Seb can get start getting more exhaust gases than normal as soon as he goes back to the gas pedal, but without enough power available to easily spin the tires.

The trick here is RBR have figured out how to massage those settings so that they get maximum exhaust flow as soon as the Seb gets on the gas, and simultaneously de-tuning the engine JUST the right amount so that Seb doesn't spin the tires by getting on the gas too early, but as the revs rise, getting back ALL the power in order to still be fast. It must be a MASSIVE balancing act.

I'm not sure how KERS could play into it, unless they have their KERS set to harvest under acceleration, which I'm not sure is possible or legal. In that case the extra drag caused by KERS could slow the car enough that earlier throttle application prevents too much power getting to the wheels which MIGHT limit wheel spin. I just pulled that idea out of my ass, so if it ever turns out that is how they are doing it, I'll be over the moon!

Christian Horner did reveal that they had a more complicated KERS system than anyone else too.
