Time to invest in surgical facemasks

The world is facing outbreaks of “totally drug-resistant” tuberculosis if explosions of the bacteria in South Africa and other poorer nations are not addressed, according to a new papers published in Emerging Infectious Diseases. At this point, researchers are working to determine how the bacteria gains its invincibility, and how to isolate it.

...

They say doctors are warning “the world is on the brink of an outbreak of a deadly and ‘virtually untreatable’ strain of drug resistant tuberculosis unless immediate action is taken.” Fears of a repeat of the 1980s outbreak in New York City that killed 90% of the people who contracted the TB strain are being cited by those urging action in poorer countries where the disease is spiralling out of control.

...

Recent reports from 2012, however, drive home the importance of isolating drug-resistant TB, since the disease has also been popping up increasingly in wealthier Western cities such as London, where, of course, it can attack rich and poor indiscriminately.

...

Researchers caution that, at this point, with mortality rates among some groups at more than 50%, containment is the goal, and they advocate the use of more specific screening tests so as to more easily isolate patients suffering from the virtually untreatable strain of TB.

SARS and the black plague came from China. 2:1 for China. By that logic, we'll have to double nuke the Orient

I am sure there will be some super drug that can cure it. But the questions is, is the drug compnay willing to use it or will they milk us for all we can first.

This has been going on for a while; iirc the WHO was really worried with last year's outbreak in India, but it was apparently contained.

Seriously though. Tuberculosis is some serious shit and we should all be wary of that coughing smelly guy on the Skytrain with the wheeze when he inhales.

In that case, I should be looking at my cat with more caution.

This is all hype. Healthy 20-40 somethings with good immune systems have nothing to worry about. Yeah, I guess if your 90, 0-3, or have an f'ed immune system.... then all you have to do is skip your yearly vacation to Zimbabwe and you will still be a-ok.

As for the racist comments, definitely not cool. Banning these people may not be the solutuion. They are who they are.

Had a TB scare four years ago when I was still in high school. New immigrant in one of my classes had brought it over with him, and all the classes he was in were promptly tested, and luckily I tested negative. A small handful of people tested positive, and fortunately only required medication.

This is shit you do not fuck with.

Think its fair to say the demographics of RS definitely play a role in this. A lot of unwarranted comments simply slip through the cracks

drunkrussian 02-13-2013 10:09 PM

how are people who are saying to nuke africa cause nothing good comes out of that shithole not banned? jesus christ, talk about ignorance.

the assumption here is essentially that africa = poor, black and starving, ignoring south africa, egypt, the entire northern africa etc. The assumption is also that the non-arabic africa, which is in fact poor, black and starving is subhuman and beneath you? "nuke a whole continent of people cause it's a shithole"? really? what kind of a piece of shit do you have to be to say that? ppl need to stop being proud of being all desensitized and politically incorrect. That shit is just corny.
