| School me on diamonds (grading/cut/setting)
Well the time has come. I'm in the market to finally buy an engagement ring, but am getting kind of lost in all the lingo, how to set the stone, where to buy the diamond, and where to get it set, etc...
I've heard you can get much better bang for your buck if you buy the diamond over the internet from a reputable source and get it shipped to you. Then pay to get the ring made locally so that it's easier for you to have the design to your liking.
Revscene, please school me on diamonds.

Boats are the worst investment.
I had my own diamond and had wifey's ring made at Michael Dean Jewellers on Granville Island. Good guy to deal with. home of Michael Dean Jeweller, Vancouver's finest diamond and gem stone setter

Go to Spence for a crash course on diamonds. They tell you and show you the 4Cs with the microscope.
I wouldn't buy from Spence though because their settings are crap and diamonds are overpiced.

A diamond is like a modern day dowry which really is a scam because as posted at RS before, good luck trying to sell it for fractions of the original price.
This money should be put in a private bank account in the name of the bride only and if you divorce or get sick and die, then this money can atleast be of a safe guard for her, unlike a diamond which its symbolism can be replaced with a glass version.

Diamond prices, due to scarcity continue to increase (although for no reason, they have next to no industrial value)
A quick flip may lose you 25-30%, but overtime, it will increase in value in absolute terms, probably be in line in real terms

Like stamps, coins, whathaveyou, the rarest of rare will keep its value and in some cases, increase in value. I don't think the kind of diamonds most people buy are in that category....... anyway, diamonds are graded for clarity, lustre, etc. which boils down to lack of flaws. You can go to many places with the same diamond and get different opinions/assessment. Like many have said, go to a reputable dealer. In the end, after all the research, you'll end up at a place you feel most comfortable. Buying a diamond on-line and then getting it set by someone else is something I woulldn't feel comfortable with.
just my 2 bits.
==========================
So, an engagement ring, huh?
A diamond is a girl's best friend, but a good partner for life = priceless. Remember that that diamond ring is just a symbol of your love. Make it shine brighter than any of her friends' rings by treating her like she was gold.
ah...........love. getting soft in my old age, LOL.

How common is it to get a replica diamond engagement ring nowadays? The Best Looking Fake Diamonds | eHow.com
Seems like CZ, white sapphire, moissanite is hard to differentiate to an untrained eye.
