Ever since I moved to surrey property values have been increasing.....coincidence? i think not. |

That's a very valid point, those two specific areas can still be rough. They're improving too, though, slowly but steadily; something many communities cannot claim about equivalent zones. You're right; lets keep them thinking it's like Detroit over here, it'll keep prices down. I'm not insecure about East of the Fraser, no need to change minds. |
I live in Cloverdale, lived in Fleetwood and Newton before that. Newton was kind of crappy even 20+ years ago when I lived there. Fleetwood wasn't to bad, I lived there from 95-07. I was so close to everything, could walk to the grocery store, video store and all that jazz. My work was maybe a 20 minute drive which wasn't bad. I moved to Cloverdale in 07 and I love it. 95% of the homes in my area were built in the last 8 years or less so the neighbourhood is very new. I have a corner store a 90 second walk from back door. I have two parks within a 5 minute walk and my sons new school will be about 2 blocks away. If you drove around where I live you would have a hard time calling it ghetto or feel it's unsafe. I understand living in the suberbs isn't for everyone, living in the city isn't for everyone either. My wife has a bit of a commute she works in Burnaby, it takes her 45-60 mins each way depending on traffic. Myself I'm only 7kms away. Some people are always going to look down there nose at Surrey if you're going to paint the whole place and everyone in it with the same brush you're just ignorant. That isn't to say it doesn't have its problems but would you take your family for a picnic in pigeon park downtown? I'm guessing no, avoid the rundown parts and live your life. |
Grew up in Newton. Rough and tumble kinda place for the most part. Saw fights pretty much every day throughout HS. If the area is getting better, I'm happy for the people living there. I got jumped by 5 guys when I was 14. They were all at least 17-18 and had to use pepper spray to blind me before laying a beating... just to take my hat. Now living a 5 minute walk from the first tee at Morgan Creek. Fantastic neighbourhood, great schools, would choose to live here over pretty much any place in the lower mainland. Love it here. Tl;dr - certain areas in Surrey rival any neighbourhood around.. others... not so much. As others have pointed out, just like most cities. |

I recommend Fleetwood area. |

I used to live there, halfway between Surrey Central and Guildford. Live 4 years in a condo there, never had my car broken into. There were some altercations in one of the condos where a guy presumably sold drugs out of it, police showing, etc. Other than that, no real issues. I liked the location, convenient, easy to get to HWY 1, easy to get to the Skytrain, easy to get to the US. No complaints, really. Keep in mind, though, I used to live in a pretty rough part of Rio de Janeiro, so things I might not even notice may cause others here to say the area sucks. I think it's OK for someone lower-middle to middle class to live. |

I think my favorite time was getting shot 4 times while walking home from Newton Junior when some douche bag with a pellet gun decided to use me as target practice. Boy I miss Newton! :derp: |

Lived in Surrey my whole life with no major complaints. Granted I grew up in a fairly quite neighbourhood's, Boundary park and Panorama ridge. Now I have a town house in South Surrey and love it out here. Pros: - Good communities - Centralish, with all the shops, and restaurants you can handle - Close to the states - Strong city development with stable housing prices Cons: - commuting to Vancouver takes a bridge or tunnel . |

I forgot about that. Whatever doesn't kill you, I guess.. |

I know a crackhouse was taken down around 152 + King George so I guess crackheads can be anywhere.. I used to rent movies around there and overheard employees talking about it. But when you go out shopping etc I've never noticed any crackheads. No crackhouses in Mortgage Creek, this I can confirm. I can also confirm that I do ignore a lot of what dinamix posts.. lol |

also, given that vancouver is host to the entertainment district (downtown area) there is a disproportionately large crime rate there. other districts and neighborhoods of vancouver have relatively lower crime rates. every city has its ups and downs. i was just wanting people to look at the numbers before they shit on surrey. :fullofwin: |
Morgan Crossing and Clayton heights area will slowly have more and more crack heads/degenerates due simply to the insanely high volume they are creating in these areas and the renter/owner ratio of these places especially in Clayton if anyone has been reading the local papers there many disgruntled owners are writing into the papers saying their area is turning into a "slum" due to people buying row homes and renting the main floor, basement, and coach home above the garage out. Not only does this fill the neighborhood with people of questionable quality but it also creates INSANE parking problems honestly the city planning in the clayton area was absolutely retarded, my grandparents have lived there just off 192 for about 4 years now, they only have 1 vehicle which they park in the garage yet every single night the streets are lined top to bottom with vehicles. As mentioned before when people are renting out 1-3 portions of homes to people with 1-2 vehicles parking is an absolute nightmare. Some nights going over to their place you have to park 100-300 feet away from the house to find a spot Morgan Crossing is starting to be the same with such high density development but at least the actual "Morgan Creek" area is divided by 16th Ave there |

OP is what's wrong with our society...judgemental with idiotic generalizations. Exhibit A:http://www.revscene.net/forums/67943...like-dogs.html |
Personally I would never reside in Surrey, but that's solely based on commute times and not the sterotype/reputation Surrey has. Personally I would not reside anywhere where I would have to cross a bridge/deal with bridge traffic to get to downtown Vancouver or the film studios in Burnaby. So I wouldn't reside in West Van, North Van or Richmond either, not just Surrey. Quote:
Surrey is off to a bad 2013 too, I recall sometime last week the news saying Surrey already has 11 homicides this year compared to 3 in Vancouver. I will say that Surrey isn't as bad as its sterotype of being another Detroit or Oakland as some people tend to think. |
Been to Surrey once in the past year. And that one time I had to go out there, I got my car broken into. When I reported it, the authorities said these exact words - "that's Surrey for ya." |
We're never going to change the mindset of these people who have come to Surrey once or twice, have heard bad stuff from their friends, on the news or are just plain ignorant to think that any place can be better than where they reside or where they're comfortable. The only con about Surrey is that no good places are open late to hang out to eat, drink and shoot the shit, that's why we have to go to places like Vancouver and Richmond. The pro that I really like about Surrey is having cul de sacs. I prefer cul de sacs vs straight roads in other cities, it makes it feel more neighbourly. Back when I was a kid, my cul de sac was booming every evening because all the kids would come to play in our cul de sac. Good times! |
