And she snapped it back at me. At work. In public. Where everyone was listening.

At that point, I had a choice in reactions. Typically what would happen is someone would go "What the fuck bitch, I told you that in confidence, how could you shout that out?" But of course, I'm hardly typical.

So what did I do? I shut the fuck up. I stopped dead. And I thought to myself, "Holy shit. She just said that to me--she must know that this thing that I don't tell everyone bothers me. Is this how I've been making her feel? Is what I've been saying the same emotional register as what she just said to me?"

And from that point on, I stopped. I dropped it. Because what's right there and obvious and easily talked about by some is something that is a slap in the face and a kick to the balls to others. One person can't judge another person's emotional intensity, in the same way that one person can't judge another's pain tolerance. When I was a kid I had gallstones--supposedly one of the most painful things one can experience, and according to one of my mother's friends even worse than childbirth. I had gallstone pain from around 5AM. But I got up, went to school, and got sent home (not of my own volition, the teacher kicked me out because he said I didn't look well enough to be there). My mom took me to the hospital at 3 and I had surgery that night. I had that stabbing pain for probably about...15 hours? Very not fun. And yeah, I cried. Twice. But the doctor told my uncle (who I trust to tell me the truth more than my parents) that he was amazed I was keeping it together. Most people couldn't.

So when people say "whatever, just brush it off" "it's no big deal". that's right. It's not. For you.

But you're not her. Or him. Or them. And we can't decide what is or isn't painful for them. Only they can.
I think it boils down to maturity. Everyone has opinions and judgments. Maturity seeks only to understand whereas immaturity voices them and then assumes everyone thinks like them, or SHOULD think like them and demands it even.

I'm glad you learned from your mistake despite being a loud mouthed jerk, it sounds like you were sensitive enough to understand things from other people's perspective. I'm glad you guys worked it out. Your Christian friend sounds like a bitch tho. lol

You only understand the social complexity of human interaction when you are older. And your understanding of human interaction can only be realised through WILFULLY exposing these situations to yourself over and over and over again. like anything in life you want to get good at.
AND only after you have done this, can you start understanding how alcohol MIGHT affect human interaction.
for you still have to expose yourself to alcohol and understand your intoxicated self (on top of your sober self) many times before you can move onto understanding a social environment where alcohol is present.

On the path to breaking these situations down, you will come to a much clearer understanding of subjectivity/objectivity of perceiving oneself and others, the social hierarchy of power, the roles of gender, stereotypes, how decisions are made, MORALITY, and of course, how alcohol affects each and every one of those in every possible combination, starting with your own mind first.

Sorry, but I don't agree with the bolded part. Your statement implies that being drunk is black and white - if you're drunk you lose the ability to make sound decisions and if you're sober you don't. There are many levels of being "drunk" from having a few drinks and feeling good all the way down to losing your memory and passing out. To state that "she was drunk and so were they" implies they are both equally responsible. We don't know how much either side had to drink and therefore have no way to determine responsibility.

Not to make light of the discussion, but I've hit on countless "drunk" woman in clubs when I was younger and a lot of them had the common sense to turn me down, so it appears they were able to make a "good decision" despite being "hammered".

Likewise I have known many "good drunks" (people who are just happy and have a good time when they drink) and I've also known "lousy drunks" (people who just want to pick fights and cause shit when they drink). Both sets of people are drunk, yet their behavior is 180 degrees out from each other. What is it that makes the "good drunk" fun to be around and the "lousy drunk" someone you don't want to see at your party? They're both drunk so how come they both haven't completely lost their ability to make a good decision?

I simply don't buy the excuse that once you drink you have no ability to make a sound moral decision, or that if two parties have been drinking that they must equally share responsibility.
