WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A group of drivers wasn’t expecting to make it on RCMP’s Air One camera as they sped along the Sea to Sky Highway.

It was a call from Squamish RCMP that resulted in several cars being taken off the road.

The police chopper followed eight cars said to be travelling in excess of 140 kilometres an hour along Highway 99 near Furry Creek.

Five of the vehicles are Nissan 240SX models ranging from 1989 to 1997 model years. Police also impounded a 1989 Nissan Skyline, a 1992 Toyota MKII and a 2000 Acura Integra.

This is an interesting twist on the usual Vancouver street racing story.

In many of the recent stories, the accused racers were young people whose parents are powerful figures in Mainland China (businessmen, government officials, etc) and driving $100k+ exotics-Maseratis, Porsches, R35s, etc.

These guys were young too, but driving 90s import cars...could they be RSers?

Edit: Also, the News1130 comments are always good for a laugh:

140 km/h is just not excessive on that highway. Almost boring.

Eight drivers were ticketed and their vehicles impounded after they were caught going nearly double the posted speed limit on the Sea to Sky Highway.

Both West Vancouver Police and Squamish RCMP received calls Friday around 11:30 p.m., reporting a caravan of cars speeding southbound on Highway 99 near Furry Creek. As both agencies worked to respond on the ground, the RCMP’s regional traffic patrol helicopter Air One began tracking the cars by air.

According to footage and observation from Air One, the cars were estimated to be travelling in excess of 140 kilometres per hour, more than double the posted 80 km/h speed limit.

The chopper continued to follow the cars until West Vancouver Police were able to set up a roadblock on Highway 1, east of Eagleridge Drive, and stop the cars.

All eight vehicles were immediately towed and impounded for a week, while the drivers were given tickets for excessive speed. The drivers range in age from 21 to 25, with six hailing from Vancouver, one from Richmond and another from Surrey.

Vehicles that were impounded include five Nissan 240SX models, ranging in vintage from 1989 to 1997. Also impounded were a 1989 Nissan Skyline, a 1992 Toyota MKII, and a 2000 Acura Integra. According to police, all vehicles appeared to feature various high-performance modifications.

The 240 posted on 1130 is pretty sick..

Gumby 05-07-2013 08:44 PM

Well, at least police didn't impound the cars based on "eyewitness accounts"...

While watching the Air One video, did anybody else think it was a AC130 video instead? :)

^I'm sure a lot of us do.

Hondaracer 05-07-2013 09:40 PM

i know the law is the law, but often coming home down HWY1 in between 232 and Port Mann i find myself going 110-125 and simply keeping up with traffic and thats driving a pick up..

wont go as far to say a 25 year old 240 is a sports car, but good cars make high speeds feel like low speeds

:troll:

murd0c 05-07-2013 09:42 PM

140 isn't all that fast on the highway but still stupid none the less
