WATCH and PROTECT your CATS! (catalytic converters, not pets)

most likely being stolen for the platinum or other 'precious' metals inside?

Rash of catalytic converter thefts in Surrey and Langley | News1130

SURREY (NEWS1130) – ICBC warns drivers to keep an eye on their cars after a rash of catalytic converter thefts in Surrey and Langley.

It’s a key component on your car and serves to protect the environment. Catalytic converters which reduce toxic emissions are being stolen by thieves.

Adam Grossman with ICBC says there’s been a rash of thefts in Surrey and Langley recently. “Most of the incidents are targeting dealerships where you will find large numbers of vehicles parked outside at night. It gives a place where thieves can sort of take a lot of these in a short amount of time.”

But some are also being swiped from private driveways. “They’re targeted because they’re fairly easy to remove from the vehicle if you know what you’re doing, and the parts can be sold on for a profit, obviously not legally, and that’s why they’re targeted,” he says.

Although it may be hard to prevent, his advice is to keep a close eye on your car. “For those personal vehicle owners, follow those tips about parking your car in a secure area whenever possible. Certainly, if you have a garage at your home, be sure to use that.”

Back on topic. Thats some pretty scary shit. Shouldn't be a problem for those guys who are lowered to the ground tho, carrying around a low profile jack ain't exactly a walk in the park.

yup, they use a hand cutter that makes no noise. If you are worried weld a bead up and down your exhaust pipe and the hand cutter won't be able to cut through. Wish I would of done that with mine :rukidding:

Whats stopping them from cutting it with a torch?

Same. I have to drive up onto a stepped series of 2x4's even before I can get a floor jack under my car. :lol

It's just demographics.. Surrey has a better chance of cat theft than Richmond.
You think a population of clais want to steal your cats? They'll just run over your actual cats.

sdubfid 05-10-2013 02:58 PM

if only they put this effort into their life

same with the guys who steal live wires

edit: List price for dodge/cummins cat/dpf is $5000-6000
scrappers buying for about $800 depending on year

Port Man 05-11-2013 01:25 PM

Happened to about 5 old 4 runners/toyota pickups just in Port Moody some years ago when he was importing and selling from California

Alatar 05-11-2013 01:59 PM

3 customers with 4runners/tacomas so far this year. Pretty common, and nothing new.

Matsuda 05-11-2013 10:31 PM
