big brother is watching you

Oh god I can just picture cic's comments :s
http://m.washingtontimes.com/news/20...onitor-tv-vie/

"It hardly gets more Orwellian than this. New technology would allow cable companies to peer directly into television watchers’ homes and monitor viewing habits and reactions to product advertisements.

The technology would come via the cable box, and at least one lawmaker on Capitol Hill is standing in opposition.

Mass. Democratic Rep. Michael Capuano has introduced a bill, the We Are Watching You Act, to prohibit the technology on boxes and collection of information absent consumer permission. The bill would also require companies that do use the data to show “we are watching you” messages on the screen and to explain just what kinds of information is being captured and for what reasons, AdWeek reported.

The technology includes cameras and microphones that are installed on DVRs or cable boxes and analyzes viewers’ responses, behaviors and statements to various ads — and then provides advertisements that are targeted to the particular household.

Specifically, the technology can monitor sleeping, eating, exercising, reading and more, AdWeek reported.

“This may sound preposterous, but it’s neither a joke nor an exaggeration,” said Mr. Capuano in a statement, AdWeek reported. “These DVRs would essentially observe consumers as they watch television as a way to super-target ads. It is an incredible invasion of privacy.”

Why respond to a thread created by someone you ignore, CiC?

Anyhoo - what a fucking joke. What if I'm JO'ing to a Victoria's Secret commercial? Does that mean it will play more often? Hmm.. maybe I'm ok with this..

The only down side I see is if you get targeted for spam mail like flyers advertising life size dolls in lingerie.

Why did I choose to reply? I felt saucy.

^ because not all sports are shown at night, and people have lives and work. Plus bars mean $, and having to deal with shitheads.

That response has 0 logic

The Xbox One does this with the Kinect camera gauges the reactions of users when watching tv/commercials/games and it supposedly uses that information to make recommendations and likely sell to ad companies/networks etc

id get kicked out of a bar if I tried that there.

yeah if I'm at home by myself I generally do not have clothes on, as most other people, so i really wouldn't want these people watching... It's so creepy knowing someone's watching you and has access inside your home which is supposed to be a safe haven...

no one else is creeped out by this?

Not really.

You'd have to let the thing in your house, or buy it. For it to be really concerning, it would need to mandated.

Right now, there is more than enough to look at that the NSA is collecting everything they can, and the ONLY thing that is causing an issue with that is the involvement of US citizens.

We're Canadian. Ain't nobody giving a shit about what of ours is being collected, analyzed and distributed to who knows what.

There are far more interesting ways to examine how out privacy is being swept away than this. It's happening now...today.

If it comes with every box, Im sure people would hire hackers to disable it... then the elites would make it illegal to tamper corporate property with jail terms.

Every breach of rights starts small. If this is allowed consider this the beginning of privacy rights bein broken in far worst ways.
CiC of all people should be up in arms over such a suggestion.
A quote from Ben Frankllin and its not the same but follows the same ideology.
"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and loose both."
To put that into context. They're proposing trading off privacy for programing. Whats more important to you as a person? As an individual? By protecting your rights you protect your individuality.

To Phil@rise
I was being sarcastic about it at first, but for sure a setup like this would condition the brain not to speak out against the system as you're always being watched even in the privacy of your own home... anyone you have over at your house will be on record so that if you're involved in a protest, all parties will be identified and arrested.

Look at the Montreal student protest that numbered over 100,000 at one time I believe... there may have been a good dozen that were influential to starting such a movement... but with full scale monitoring, the initial leaders and organizers could've easily been rounded up for conspiring treacherous riots against the Queen.

With cable systems.. not really. eg they use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CableCARD, we thankfully don't.

Don't want camera in your living room? Don't get a smart TV (heck LG admits they collect personal info on their TV owners) that comes with a camera. Xbox or any Playstation; problem very easily solved.

It all comes down to personal choice. No one is forcing you to watch cable and or have a camera in your living room.
