I believe 91-92 doesn't have any octane either.

like i said earlier in vancouver at least, only shell 91 doesn't have ethanol. i believe chevron 94 doesn't either but i mean if there is no power difference with 94 then shell 91 should be good for pretty much any car out there.

and i don't want to generalize about all gas stations but a specific husky that i know of makes only around 2-3 cents per litre when the price is good. often they only make a cent or less or even at cost to compete with other stations.

and they sell about 10,000 litres of gas per day so do the math. not a lot of money. they make more from cigarettes and soft drinks.

but they DO make alot more money from propane and diesel.

filled up today. $21 :troll:

dared3vil0 07-15-2013 09:59 PM

I find it hard to believe a gas station makes anywhere from $0-$300 a day on gas and stays in business...

your friends dad doesnt own those stations. maybe 1 or 2 but i highly doubt that. he just "manages" the sites. the store and the contents in side of it are how he makes his money. they just receive a percentage from the gas sales.

my cousin runs the esso site on mountain hwy in north van. if you guys want a good car wash and live in north van, go to his site. hes very anal about how his car wash works so its always in tip top shape.

So when the street price goes up 3 cents do they pay more for the gas they already have in there tanks? ;) .

no they get deliveries every 3-4 days
and price is different each time i guess.

don't know all the specifics. and yes it's hard to believe that they dont make that much on gas alone but that's what they told me.

I never owned any of the above cars so I cannot verify, but a friend of mine drives a 911 Turbo, and he is fine w/ 91 gas......so weird that stock Vettes and GTRs are tuned for 94s...

Most modern cars that have engines designed for higher octane gases are capable of adjusting the timing to run lower octane gas. They may recommend 94 for "optimal performance" but the car will still run perfectly fine on 87.

xpl0sive 07-16-2013 02:58 PM

I highly doubt any car manufacturer says that the car is required to have 94 octane, simply because most of the US doesn't get 94 octane fuel. The highest most places have is 91 and some states have 93. As far as I know, California has banned 93 octane and they only get 91 now. Most luxury and performance cars require "Premium" fuel, which is 91 and higher by NA standards.
As far as optimal performance, if your car has a high compression engine and advanced timing, it won't run "fine" on 87. You may think it runs fine, but really your ECU is having to constantly dump fuel in order to compensate for detonation due to the low octane...thats why people say they get better fuel mileage with higher octane fuel... less detonation = less fuel dump.
If your engine was designed to run on 87 octane, which means it's a low compression engine, then putting 91 or 94 into your car is just a waste of money.

Gas is so expensive... but I can't let go of the V8 rumble just yet...

no one was boycotting just one gas station. people/trucking/delivery companies simply said that they wont buy fuel for a number of days, and they didn't. Sure one or two people boycotting your local petro can won't hurt the giant gas corporation, but when you have a few million people not spending $50 on average on fuel, that does hurt.

You expect people to stop driving for a few days? People will just buy fuel before or after the boycott.

you say that like i'm promoting it. all I'm saying is it's happened before, when the truckers refused to buy fuel and it did affect the gas companies.

All i know is i'm mighty fucking tired of paying ~1.53/liter. HOWEVER, i think i'd get tired of the alternative awful quick...

Whats your alternative? Bus? Biking?

dared3vil0 07-16-2013 03:57 PM

^ I don't have one, that was kind of the point.

I'll admit "just fine" was a bit of overstatement. I was tired when I wrote that. :p I just meant that in the short term the negative effects it'll have on your engine is minimal as they're capable of retarding the timing to combat the lower detonation of 87. I would never recommend it for more than a couple fill ups as you'll see the same negative fuel mileage as a base Civic would that uses 94.

2damaxmr2 07-16-2013 05:12 PM

12.5:1 compression ratio. I do need 93+ octane or the engine will knock.

lol.

with that said shell premium all day everyday, and trust me it costs me a fortune in a 4000lb fx.

but as someone else said, you gotta pay to play

mr_chin 08-06-2013 11:09 PM

bringing back old thread.

ethanol is known to cause corrosion on engine because of the water it absorbs.

i've been use chevron 94 for my accord which is regular unleaded fuel according to the manual. i'm gonna test the mileage difference vs 89 next fill up since i got the $20 petro gift card from shoppers.

R. Mutt 08-08-2013 12:53 PM

Wa? I think you are mixing up methanol and ethanol. And even if that were the case there is not enough ethanol content in the gas to damage internals. Moreover, why are so many tuned cars in the US running E85 successfully in the 400-1000 +whp (many of which are daily driven cars too).

I'm still of the opinion that Canadian market Chevron 94 is shitty gas. Its knock resistance is lower than US market Chevron 92.

dared3vil0 08-08-2013 12:57 PM

ONLY RUN PREMIUM IF YOUR CAR SAYS TO! Your wasting money on your old accord by putting 94 in it.

Timpo 08-08-2013 01:08 PM

ok it's not $1.50+/L

We've been talking about $2+/L for like 3 or 4 years now...and it's yet to happen.

Then you better not drive your car over to eastern canada :lawl: because the best they have is 91.

:yuno: Unless you guys can prove to me dealers tune cars based on region, I stand by the fact that there's no need to put anything more than 91. You are just wasting your money.

knight604 08-09-2013 08:11 PM

gas spike my ass , my arse was ready.
