Emission control devices truly hinder the TDI from getting great fuel economy and more power.

Fits ARE cool. I'm biased, but traded in my IS and have never looked back.. worth a test drive IMO. Versatile, CHEAP and you can mod them quite nicely.

TSX is a great choice as well, but premium gas adds up.

my vote goes to the TSX, 4 door vtec K engine made in Japan if it was a 6spd then its even better. No 4 door gets better than that. well except my is300 which is comparable and has its pros and cons... LOL

2011 Sonata. 6MT and only 22km for 12k??

2011 Hyundai Sonata GL 22km

There is currently a 6-speed MT , white TSX at Regency Nissan/Infiniti @ Northshore right now. I do not know if it has been sold, but it was still on the lot today. It looks really good though

We were looking at a Jetta 2.0T as well as a TSX. Can you guys recommend some other vehicles that would fit this bill?

limiting yourself to 2008+ will be tough...esp for the previous gen TSX
similarly why not look at the Accord?
A quick glance and it seems like manual is rare too

if you want a killer family sedan get a Legacy GT...not exactly a women's car but with the minor mods you have in mind this would be spacious and fun

My bad, finger slipped on key pad, was suppose to be 2005 not 2008 :P

Exact words to describe the fit from the wife "It looks like a sperm...is there a version where its all grown up looking?"

The TL is a nice ride but I can not find any that are 6 speed.

The plan is for her to own the car for the next 5-10 years and I hear horror stories about the autos in all the newer FWD cars and I do not want to deal with that.
She has been driving standard who whole life and we both feel that a standard is the way to go with this. Something to keep it more reliable.
Having leather is a plus as when the kids make a mess it is easier to clean it up. However, it has to be a dark colour as the light colours stain to easily.
Navi is a nice feature but not something we need as she is like a human GPS system.

4 doors is a must as is a decent trunk.
She does not want a wagon, and nothing american. Her family has the worst stories about american vehicles that I have ever heard......yet they still buy them.
Needs to be a car that pulls double duty as something to get around in but is also a nice car that she will enjoy driving.

The TL and TSX with a 2.4 and 6-speed seem to fit this bill spot on.
The VW Jetta 2.0T is nice but the TSX and TL both seem to have far better customer rating on the reliability standpoint. The TDI's seem to require a fair share of repairs as they age and its not something cheap.

Looks like with the new models they clog up and cost a lot to repair. To many emissions devices just kill the car off.

Mazda 3 she does not like. We drove a few and they feel far to cheap in the interior and are everywhere. Also does not like the hatchback part.
Fit.....well she answered that one.

Any other suggestions? I like the look of the Camary but they don't do standards :/

She has owned almost all civics in the time she has been driving so I understand.

Get the Acura for reliability.

The VW is not bad as well, but I would say the Acura.

Good luck.

it doesnt meet the price or year requirement... but I do agree that it'd be a good idea to lift the 2008 requirement.

edit: found the perfect car (meets all original criteria+leather, could be bargained to 15K): http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/va...905116446.html

But if the car is a 2006.. it is 7 years old.. No matter how reliable any car might be; 7 years is probably a good time to refurb things like suspension, brake lines etc etc. OP should set aside some $$ to deal with those issues.

When I first glanced at the thread title, I thought it was a joke thread about trading a car for a wife (or vice versa )

I've got an MK4 (2000MY) TDI and it's been nothing but reliable. It's got 350k on the odo and the only repairs it's had is typical maintenance. Oh, actually one of the turbo pipes popped loose but since nothing had to be repaired, I don't actually count that as a breakdown.

I'm a huge VW fan, though. I've owned 10 different ones in the past (admittedly nothing newer than this one) amd, except for my B3 Passat, they were all super reliable and never had anything go wrong on 'em. The current gen's might be a different story but I wouldn't hesitate to go for one.

I was looking at legacy GT's as someone else mentioned when I was looking at new cars. I needed AWD and really liked the sleeper sedan looks. Everything I read said they were great.

Only thing that killed it for me was I was looking for a B-spec which are pretty rare, and I think I had even narrowed it down to 2007 only, as the only other year they had the B-spec was 06 and the changes made to the 07 model were stuff I wanted.
