i applied for a nexus like 2 months ago and got the confirmation just last week for an interview...earliest available interview slot for downtown and airport is dec 12...so i opted for the blaine one for october...

Just a FYI. Taxes and duties are not the same thing.
The CBSA rarely charges duties on any item. If you get called into the offices to pay, you are generally being charged tax.

Therefore, even if the item is duty free, it is still subject to taxes. A lot of people think duty and taxes are the same thing. They are not.

Tax in Vancouver is 12%. So all items coming into Canada may be charged 12% tax. Duty is a totally independent and different tax, which in my experiences have never been charged.

US made items, albeit rare, are duty free, thanks to Free Trade Agreement.

For higher ticketed items, I wonder if you can claim back taxes paid. Wouldn't be worth it unless it was pretty expensive item.

so what about us 'non nexus mofos' who have to deal with the regular lineups. I go down during the late evening hours or super early morning hours to beat the rush so I can fill up the tank... but sometimes you screw yourself and pick the wrong lineup while the other line(s) move a lot quicker. there's really no way to predict which lineup will move fastest when approaching the gates.

make sure you car is empty! I look out for campers, vans, and trucks. Avoid them as much as possible. At Peace Arch, and correct me if I'm wrong, the right lane is faster. At least if was yesterday. The right lane splits up into 4 or 5 lanes, while the left one splits up into 2, maybe 3. There's this heavy set, middle aged, caucasian dude who one should avoid if in a hurry. He's a talker. Won't stop talking. Real friendly guy, for sure, but man, when you're in a hurry.......... he has the slowest line always. The blonde at the Sumas crossing, now when I come across her, I just put the car into park, lean on the door and have a long conversation. She has the nicest hazel eyes. I even asked once how she got the job and how tough it was to pass firearms training, LOL. The drivers behind me were getting pretty upset.

Yup, I leave as much stuff at home as I can. I only take booster cables and first aid kit. Coolers are OK. Oh yeah, bring lots of reusable bags. Businesses in Washington get fined if they use plastic bags. They sell paper bags for anywhere from 5 to 25 cents each to their customers.

Another neat place to go in Bellingham is Trader Joes. One had to go all the way into Seattle to shop at Trader Joes, but now that there's one in Bellingham, it's actually possible to bring back their frozen goodies still in a frozen state (their freezer bags are awesome, btw).

When I used to go down often, I used a T-Mobile SIM. I haven't looked at ROAM, but T-Mobile is $2/day (unlimited voice, 2G data), or $3/day (unlimited voice, 4G (non LTE) data).

T-Mobile Pros: $1 cheaper per day, unlimited data

Roam Cons: $1 more expensive per day, only 100MB data per day

Personally the pros for Roam were better for myself (don't travel into US frequently, keep in contact with family/gf while travelling) vs T-Mobile.

If I'm not mistaken, Roam is just a TMobile MVNO so you're on the same network.
With an iPhone, you'll most likely get Edge (2G) speeds for data unless you happened to be in their refarmed 1900mhz areas.

I remember when I was in BC, there is this place I ALWAYS go for breakfast when I head down: Little Cheerful in Bellingham. Until today, that's among things I truly miss of west coast.

As for non-nexus folks, if the layout didn't changed much, always stick to the lines to your left. The reason is that the highway is narrow before getting to the booth. And the left lanes usually have access to more lanes once near there, thus, line moves faster. But with the frequent construction, I'm not so sure now.
