Anyone have experiences importing Canadian made products purchased in the states.

GST and PST would be understandable but not sure on duties?

Duty does not apply to goods made in North America under NAFTA.

Just keep in mind GST+PST is charged on the total amount paid for the product (including state tax, but not shipping) after the conversion from USD to CAD.

Newbie here...

Is there a way to find out the product you bring over will be charged duty fee?

And if it's something small like a lipstick or lotion, couldn't you just hide it somewhere?

Travellers - Duty and Taxes Estimator

And most people I know separate their purchases, ie: things they will declare and things they will not declare (ie: stuff consumed immediately like or "smuggled") It's up to you if you want to risk it.

I don't think any border agent will care about a $2 chapstick.

the cost of the form the CBSA officer fills out costs about $8.00 so if you are brining back something small you will not get charged duty for it.

When you cross the border, they ask you questions like..........

Where do you live?

When did you cross into the US?

Where did you go? Why did you go?

What is the total amount for items you are bringing back?

Any alcohol or tobacco?

Other questions they may ask............

Actually, they ask really weird questions to try and throw you off........ they know if you're hiding something, so just be honest. If you're honest, you won't be looking so guilty and the above questions are all they ask. They do not ask for specific items. Just say groceries. If you picked something up, like a parcel, just say so. They really don't care, but like it when you tell them everything. Any time I pick up an item from the post office or shipping depot, I have the papers with me. I have it in my hands. Usually when they see it, they just let you go.

Just be cool...............

If you have a passenger(s), make sure they remove sunglasses and hoodies and make sure they are visible. Have them show their face. If you have children, especially dumbass teens who bury their faces in smartphone playing games, smack 'em up the side of the head before you hit the border.

that's pretty much it.

If it's your first time, let it be a gentle and pleasant experience, rather than a painful one. I'd be more worried about the other side. They just love first timers, lol.

From my experience, anything under $200~, they most likely won't bother making you pay tax.

imo, not worth sneaking anything through though. Just expect to pay, and if you're lucky and don't need to pay taxes,

Both below are picking up from Blaine - was down there less than 10 minutes.

$800 USD, which was about $900 CDN at the time.
Then the next time I crossed I got taxed on $140 USD.

In the past 4 months, making short 30 min trips to Blaine. Got through without paying taxes on $14. Everything else was couple hundred and taxed every time.

We crossed in Windsor once after doing a bunch of shopping in Detroit (that was the purpose of the trip, which we told the guy) and they never even asked. I think he saw the stack of receipts in my moms hand and didn't want to deal with it lol.

$1400 USD declared through Nexus for a 15min trip to 24/7 parcel in Blaine.

The border agent grilled me on what it was (car parts: Turbo and some other parts), if it was for my own business. Then he repeated $1200 and I corrected him, "No sir, $1400 USD" and then he waved me through.
