Police stopped six motorcyclists in their tracks after they were caught speeding upwards of 162 kilometres an hour on the Sea to Sky Highway in Squamish.
Traffic officers pulled over the group driving Ducati, Honda and Aprillia motorbikes at around 9 p.m. while they were travelling southbound on Highway 99 at Porteau Road on Thursday.
The group was observed driving at around 140 kilometres an hour, but sped up when they saw police.
The lead motorcyclist was clocked speeding 162 kilometres an hour in an 80 kilometre zone.

I fully expect the usual debate between the 140-isn't-that-fast crowd and the OMFG-they-were-doing-double-the-speed-limit group. What struck me, however, was that they sped up when they saw the police.

Radio waves constitute a narrow band in the electromagnetic spectrum that includes light, radio, cellphone, and et cetera. The entire es travels at the speed of light, which is 186,000 miles per second, or more pertinently, 1,079,252,848 kilometers per hour. The Squamish Constable's radio to police patrolling the Sea to Sky ahead of the motorcyclists was thus travelling 6,662,054 times faster than them. The motorcyclists stood no chance, outrunning police on the Sea to Sky is impossible.
I wouldn't believe all of what they are saying and take the part that "they were trying to outrun the cop" with a grain of salt. the news media is known to make shit up.
A lot of guys on street bikes drive like assholes. Not all of them. Lots of responsible riders out there, but a LOT do. We've all seen them.
I know a guy who outran a cop on his R1 IN THE STATES. He didn't realize how fast he was going until he looked down and saw his speedo bouncing on the (IIRC) 220 mark. When he told me the story I told him it was pretty stupid.
Got through the border too... lucky the cop didnt notice the BC plate.

I don't know their circumstances, but honestly anytime I've ever taken my bike on S2S at some point when it was a clear straightaway with no cars I've eclipsed 200 for a few seconds and then slowed back down, never felt like I was in danger... like that uphill straightaway before Squamish... meh. It only takes like 4-5 seconds of acceleration on a big bike to hit north of 200.
That said, doing it in a big group with poor visibility is just asking for it and everyone worth their salt knows S2S is a complete heat score at the best of times.
I was listening to this story on the radio yesterday; the cop being interviewed stated the bikes were running 1-2m apart at those speeds. Nevermind wildlife, all it takes is one bike to lose it, and everyone behind him is toast too.

I think the Tokyo Drift reference actually might have a point to make here. If the cops chasing you down makes you go even faster it not only increases the threat you pose to the public and to yourself, but also the chase car etc. poses.
It might not be worth it to make the roads more dangerous for everyone to hand out that ticket/impounding. Then again most motorists would probably stop/pull over at the sight of cops
they picked a shitty place to try and outrun the cops.. no where to go on the sea to sky. a bunch of my buddies with bikes have told me stories of taking off from a cop trying to pull them over on the highway. the key is to get off the highway, since apparently they are not allowed to chase people on city streets....
lol, just because you "outrun" the cops, doesn't mean you are in the clear. There are things called your licence plates. There are support units called "Air 1" aka helicopter. There are things called "be on the look out for" which are broadcasted to other jurisdictions. oh yea, and there is a Motor vehicle act fine for failing to stop for police, and a criminal code offence called obstruction.

Did they also tell you that the cops showed up at their places later? Because that's what my buddy with bike told me.
