The cities of Langford, Vernon and Richmond are all leading the charge to reduce the dangers of high-speed traffic with a unique pace car program.
Just like on racetracks, the clearly-marked pace cars would stick to the speed limit on local roads, hopefully encouraging other drivers to do the same.
...
Parachute says their volunteers sign a “Pace Car Supporters Pledge” and proudly display the official Pace Car emblems on their car. Motorists have already signed up in Langford, according to Parachute.
After that, they drive the speed limit, hoping to encourage others to do the same.
...
Alan Lamb, Director of the Pacific Traffic Education Centre at the Justice Institute of BC, says the presence of pace cars could frustrate drivers.
“The safest thing is to keep traffic at roughly the same speed, the much discussed 85th percentile. Trying to force people behind these so-called “mobile speed bumps” could cause conflicts, anger, dangerous driving… even road rage.”
...
Kerry Zado, Deputy Fire Chief of Langford, who is also one of the organizers of the campaign in that city, says that if people are driving the speed limit, there are no issues.
“We’ve told the people who have agreed to do this, that if someone is tailgating or looks aggressive, or needs to get by you, pull over and let them go by. We are not trying to be the police state — that’s not what’s it about. It’s about encouraging everybody to slow down to the speed limit.”
She taught me right from wrong and always told me to stay positive and help others no matter how small the deed - that helping others gives us meaning to carry on. The sun is out today and it's a new day. Life is good. I just needed a slap in the face.
you will definitely get mr/mrs. officer-wannabe signing up for this program and be gung-ho, balls to the walls with the speed enforcement bullshit on this.
just wait till one of those "pace car" drivers start power tripping and try to block people from speeding past.
cause pace cars have such a good track record (no pun intended) with professional drivers during a warm up lap that it'll likely translate well into our streets.

That's what my thought was too, can't believe now people don't have anything better to do. If I see one of these fuckers I'll make sure to go by them doing double the speed limit. Posted via RS Mobile
this is the EXACT response this program will get - everyone usually travels about 60, maybe 65 on the big 50kmph roads of richmond (these roads are 2-3 lanes at times, definitely not dangerous to go 60 on them in modern cars) will now get some smart arse fucktard purposely slowing them down. there is nothing more aggravating than going 50kmph when there is no real reason not to go 20% faster.
it will just end up with people up their arses (which i'm sure will lead to these pace cars brake checking, because if you're the kind of person to be a pace car, you're likely one of those know it all twits that say "well i'm going the speed limit, get off my back *brake*"), more rear end accidents, more road rage incidents, more acts of aggression which will lead to dangerous passing maneuvers
all in all, whoever thought up this idea should be shot in the kneecap, it is so childish and unnecessary.
i agree that we need to stop those going 100+ in 50 zones, they are a danger to one and all, but slowing EVERYONE down won't make 1 ounce of a difference.
what happens if one of these "pace" vehicles gets into an accident while on "duty"?
do my tax dollars go towards paying for these muppets' bad judgement calls?
ffs, they'll need to pay some cunt to do a "long term study" on the pace cars. then they'll pay some other fool to write a report on why we should get rid of pace cars after there is a public outcry on how fucking stupid this is. waste of time and money on a program that is completely ridiculous.
maybe its time for me to upgrade from:
to:
that way i can safely push this turds off to the side of the road where they belong.
i hate the attitude of "canadians" towards motor vehicles and speed - speed isn't the issue here, lack of driver ability and education is THE issue
You haven't travelled much around Canada have you? Only British Columbians have a retarded attitude toward speed. Ontarians and québécois will happily drive on average 40-60 km/h above the posted limit on highways. Posted via RS Mobile
Ever since that documentary on speed that basically shits on everything reported by Global News, it's safe to say that Global shouldn't even be considered a read for anything related to traffic news.
Oh and fuck this program, too. We have pace cars already, they're called Driving School cars.

well said - you're right, i've never driven outside of BC, as if i travel, I go south, to asia, or to europe, places where driving is WAY better.
This is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.
This is not going to solve the problem of speeding. In fact, it will probably make it worse. Like dared3vil0 said, it's only gonna cause road rage, and more aggressive driving. Some people will even pass these "pace cars" at high speeds just to prove a point. To prove that others can't control the way they drive.
Also, statistics have shown that the majority of speed related traffic accidents are caused because a car is going BELOW the traffic flow, and not above.
I'm not encouraging speeding here, but this really is a stupid idea. It won't solve anything, and will only make things worse.
