I joined the "scene" in '00 when glowing neon insect cars plastered with confusing graphics and incomprehensible text ran the streets. "Clean" cars were the exception and where I chose to reside.

Well over a decade later, I question what has become of the craze. A few Prelude Type Rs and turboed Mustangs with headers still fart around the streets of Metrotown, but to me the past few years have seen a significant drop/shift in aftermarket tuning, at least in the lower mainland. Tuning shops have downsized or closed down, newer cars are relatively modification-unfriendly, and the 19 year old offspring of mainland Chinese tycoons cannot appreciate the tone of your 5Zigen because it's being drowned out by his Gallardo's V10.

Partly due to manufacturer's shifts in model offerings, the aftermarket now seems to cater to a very specific and limited model range (FR-S/BR-Z, Impreza, GT-R), and to the upper echelon of $80K + cars.

I remember when people would freak out when gas prices went over 40 cents/litre, times have definitely changed.

Oh man I'm glad you mentioned this. I still have my Gamecube and NFSU 1 & 2 somewhere, hopefully I can find it and my memory card, I'm sure I have some doozies on there.

I remember how badly I wanted an R34 Skyline GTR back in those days, (I was still fairly young and couldn't even drive yet) and I planned on hooking my Gamecube up to our VCR to record how I wanted my R34 and then taking that to a shop to get it modded exactly how I wanted it.

Need for Speed underground II... I distinctly remember a lambo orange civic with a huge wing, green flames and green underglow as being "awesome"... Ohhhhh those were the days.

EDIT: Can't forget this one...

I think I was like 13 then, playing NFS U2, my tricolor flamed lambo doored 6 SUB DVD playing nitros puffing chrome spinnas sporting Civic SI was my ultimate dream car...nice to see how fads from the past have changed...wonder if in 20years, we'll look at stance and hellaflush the same

Guaranteed most people will think it looks like shit given a few years. Hellaflush and HID's shoved in everything will die just like murdered out and lambo doors.

"hellaflush" is already terrible.. a nice fit is a different story.

and some people run HID for the fact that they are considerably brighter than stock lights.. not to look "cool"

Papa Wheely!

I still remember the same as you do... it is still sort of hanging on in the webverse: MaxBoost

snails 01-22-2014 12:26 PM

Cman and 5ziggy's civic meet at Lansedowne... good times. Brand new stock SiR gets VI'd for having a spoiler and being "modified"

this is the oldest i have...

the car was sold last year to a guy on the sunshine coast... since then apparently it was driven into a ditch and sold to another guy who has been in touch with the shop who did most of the mods to get it fixed up again

Ah, I remember the mugen spoiler. I exchanged nods with the owner in downtown, the only occasion I saw this car. (pretty sure it was under your brother's ownership at the time, judging by the approx timeline).

I have a mango teg, painted before F&F days (out of the paint shop sometime in 2000) as well. (believe pic is in sig)

HID in headlight is ok

HID in DRL, fog light, reverse light, side marker, parking light etc is not ok

I loved those comics... Think his name was Max, and wanted a dc2r but got a civic dx hatch green and Todd kept pushing his buttons with his mustang...ahhh... Good times.
My 2001 importfest trophies had their comic strip attached to it... Haha.... I miss the old days...

True enough, I've always hated hellaflush, stretched tires, etc. At least the other fads were just ugly, some of those cars become seriously dangerous when their running on those piddly contact patches.

I do understand that some people actually use HID's to see better, but most people just drive in the city where you don't even need headlights and run HIDs in shitty conversions that blind everyone to look cool. And don't get me started on the HID foglight/reverse light/turn single bullshit.
