Monster Miata / Miata fans in here pls

Anyone here ever driven one or rode in one?

Miatas are so cheap, 3-5k for a 1990-1994 Miata, the V8 swap kit is $4k from the US, and a 5.0 / T5 can be had for a high-five and a bottle of Crown given to a Surrey Jack. The differential setup is about a g though.

My Vortech S2000 was so much fun but at the time the rear diff had no real solutions and the engine and transmission were super expensive to build or repair. Going with Ford 5.0 parts makes any sportscar absolutely dirt cheap to run!

I assume a good suspension setup on the Miata is also really cheap.

Also, the Miata can look really sharp, IMO.

Never sat in one, but the guys I know with heavily modded miatas have all gone turbo. There's definitely the novelty of having a V8, but it's going to cost you more for the same performance.

Going v8 and getting a reliable 300whp and 350 foot torque is gonna be much cheaper than going turbo on the og engine. The power band is more user friendly as well. The V8 kits even come with chassis reinforcements.

Would much rather a well setup 4 cylinder car. Sure the V8 give you loads of power but it makes a light nimble car that is fun to drive into something that may kill you. Part of the appeal of the Miata (for me) was the fact that they had just enough power to have fun and you could really push the limits of the car. With a V8 it gets a bit crazy :P

Mr.Stubbz 03-19-2014 09:30 AM

why not put a vtec engine in it? you'd get more power compared to the stock miata engine but being a 4 cyl you keep the lightness in the front end compared to swapping in a v8 in it

- IMO, NA Miata in good condition are becoming increasingly difficult to find. The NA6 are 20-25 year old cars after all, and back then rust proofing wasn't exactly Japanese manufacturers' strong suit. Even the NA8 are still 15-20 year old cars.

- Turbo is definitely far more common than monster V8 swaps in the Miata. The B6 and BP engines respond well to turbo charging, giving you both good power and reliability (because the engine was designed with FI in mind originally.) And as other posters mentioned, the turbo usually doesn't completely change the characteristic of the car.

- The V8 Miatas is a completely different beast. I haven't driven nor sat in one, but I've done enough reading on it that I know it is a short wheelbased V8 torque monster. There is power everywhere. You can spin your rear tires at will in 3rd gear. If you don't respect the throttle (or don't know how to control it), you are simply asking for trouble.

If you have the money to spend, go ls1 miata. Pretty much the same cost in kit but it's just the initial cost of the motor that is more. There are a bunch of ls7 miatas and there are 2 or 3 turbocharged ls7 miatas on club roadster. One with a rear mounted turbo and another with an engine bay mounted turbo.

Anyways. Even if you go 5.0 I'd suggest yes do it. I owned a miata for years a d sank many thousands into it. Maybe look into importing a dry miata from the states. Go for a 90 or 91 as they are the lightest ones you can find.

I had a 1.6l rotrex charged mistake. 310rwhp, most fun I've ever had in a car.

godwin 03-19-2014 02:20 PM

Because most VTEC engine are latitudinal.. you need to mod quite a bit or get a S2000 engine.

The 5.0 is much, much, much cheaper than the LS, and dare I say it sounds better too!!!

sdubfid 03-19-2014 07:26 PM

5.0 can sound good IMO but 4g sounds outrageous for a swap kit

I bought sbc mounts for rx7 10 years ago for less than $150, add headers, exhaust work, driveshaft. I just don't see where that 4g is going.

But you had tonnes of money into that think. I bet a more reliable v8 swap could come in cheaper

I think my perfect Miata (though i can think of a few other cars i'd buy first, but anyway) would be a stock S54 (out of an E46) with an LSD and a 6MT... :megusta:

As I get older I'm all about the bang for the buck

Look on CL, 5.0 engines are so fucking dirt cheap. Seriously I would love to make a web episode of a car show where I trade a few drinks and a burger for parts like a shortblock and shit. I bet I could find a few Surrey Jacks that would trade me a night out at Ginger 62 for a 5.0 longblock

multicartual 03-19-2014 09:47 PM

CL ad:

"Will trade all expenses paid from from Surrey to DT and back in a limo plus all you can drink for a 5.0 and T5"

POWAAAA!!

Miata kits aren't some half assed just engine mount kit. If you look what's included and what's involved, it takes the miata into a fully fledged v8 powered roadster. Not just a car with a v8 shoehorned in. Kits come with full subframe and chassis strengthening and are fully designed. Gotta pay to play with quality
