I wonder if it was the one I went to see, it was so gross looking that I didn't even take it for a test drive.

O I saw the ad for that one. So beat that wasn't worth the asking price. I saw 2 grey ones. One was on commercial dr. Trunk had dirt all in it that they didn't even bother to clean out, scratches and faded everything. Then I saw a one owner grey one in Surrey for around $3600 but it sold pretty much the day that it was listed up. Some grandma bought it on the spot.

In the beginning I smelled the clutch a LOT and I was no stick newbie. But once you got the hang of it, it was easy peasy though didn't have a lot of torque for backing up on hills.
I don't think I'd be able to drive it again after being spoiled with a 5.0 V8 and 3.73 gears haha

I kind of like the ebbs and flows this thread goes through based on particular cars and posts that get shared. I've discovered and learned about hidden gem models from this thread I wouldn't have found elsewhere, including my e82.

^ Avoid first gen X5's like the plague. If you absolutely have to own one, the facelift 6 cylinder one is the one to get. Manual is obviously a huge plus, and really cool.
My close friend just HAD to get the early 4.6L V8 model and he was spending $1k monthly to sort out e-suspension issues, T-case exploding, etc etc. until finally timing skipped and sold it for scrap. We added up receipts over two years, totaling $15k...and even then this was us fixing things ourselves when the job was in our scope (Wheel bearings, brakes etc.) Some things just required a BMW tech / tooling.
I totally get it, if you are a BMW enthusiast it is tempting to get one of these because on paper, it is a great daily for BC. But if you think you can drive this worry free whilst your [insert M car here] is at CG gettin the modz, best believe your X5 will be in the shop just as much.

^^ Truth, please get a Benz. Went from e39 to e53, and it was a money pit plus pretty bad on gas. Mine was a 6 cylinder too. Loved the look and driving feel but just tired of getting caught up with endless bmw problems.

$3,500 for this seems cheap to me. Highest trim too. Who's wife / gf needs a car?
Looks clean, I wonder if the CVT will be okay at this mileage.

Very nice run around town cars. Tons of room inside and one of the few cars you can drive while wearing a top hat. super comfy seats. rear seats slide back and forth and recline!
quiet inside. well built.
only annoying thing is the CVT box and sluggishness... doesnt do well on highway when there is a crosswind.
its kind of an alternative to a FWD element.

Super rare but you can find them with a 6-speed, which would definitely be better for performance. If it’s anything like my SO’s Versa, the manual is nothing to write home about but likely way more reliable than a Nissan CVT.

same platform as Versa of the same vintage, but the cube was made in japan!
Fit and finish is pretty much same as early Honda Fit - well put together and quite solid inside.

I'll be the counterpoint to this comment, I picked up an e53 x5 with 200K on it a year and a half ago for $850. I fixed the few bits of deferred maintenance it needed and have been driving it around for the last year and a half with no issues. The M54 inline 6 is one of BMW's more reliable engines (I know, I know, that is a low bar). I picked mine up because it had the 6 cylinder engine, coil suspension and a regular sunroof thus avoiding some of the common failure points of the E53 platform. You see these things posted up on CL reasonably often with 270,000-290,000 km on them.
Disclaimer: this is my purely anecdotal experience (like the other post quoted) and I would avoid the V8 version like the plague. That being said, I don't mind that they have a bad rap if that means I can pick these things up at throwaway car prices. Quote:
