It's about 25% too high.
That said, we live in a city of "easy come, easy go", so the value of an actual dollar is getting lower and lower.

The big question is, why an 04?
They have the smaller 5x100 hubs.
That means that your car will be more prone to flexing in the hubs which will cause your brake pistons to be pushed back. That may not seem like an issue, but trust me, it is terrifying when you need to pump the brakes to get the car to stop.

They also have the mechanical differential which throws out a 45/55% torque split. What does this mean? It means your STi is going to be a tail happy bitch to control at the limit. Mine was more like a 5.0L mustang than awd rally beast.

They have the poorly designed rear struts that will sieze up on you after a winter of driving. They also have the old style HVAC controls, and are prone to boost creep. While we're talking boost creep, I should also bring up the poorly designed fuel system that causes a heat buildup in one cylinder. That is the main cause of ringland failure, a problem that I had to deal with on my 04'.

Imho, the 05' is the better choice for the blobeye body style. Or you can do yourself a real favor and get an 06' which has far better aerodynamics.

Prices of everything right now are making me sick.....
Here's an example of insanity from one of the BC Subaru dealers.
2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Sti | used cars & trucks | Penticton | Kijiji

$21,995 for an 04' with 160k kms.

160,000kms.

That car is going to be in need of some serious repair love soon. A brake job on the Brembos is going to cost you a grand, minimum. That ringland failure I talked about earlier, that's going to need a short block replacement. Strut sticking? New oem units are about half the price of aftermarket at about $500.

Like I said, a fool and his money are soon seperated.

But finding a mint decent mileage 05 blobeye is near impossible nowadays.

bcuzracecarz 05-11-2016 10:25 AM

Potentially a solid deal, LHD TT's are super rare to find now, regardless of mileage

Consider that the 05' is 11 years old now. Trying to find anything that's 11 years old with low mileage is a difficult proposition, and one can expect to pay a premium for that. What should that premium be? That's for the market to decide. But because someone gets $25k for their low mileage 05', doesn't automatically make all of the other 05' models go up in price.

I was on Nasioc earlier, and there are a lot of options for 04' cars around $12k usd. And of course there are the idiots who consider mods to be "investments".

05 STi just sold on BAT for $21k USD plus buyer premium

2005 Subaru WRX STi | Bring a Trailer

1M pricing doesn't surprise me. It is pretty much a guarantee to be a future collector car thanks to limited production, wide body, 6spd etc. It will likely hold it's value or appreciate. Everyone wants the low mileage examples but even ones that have been driven will go up in value accordingly.

westopher 05-11-2016 11:15 AM

The thing about the 1m, is I've said it before, just not that great of a drivers car compared to the other M cars for the price. You can buy an e36, e46, and e92 m3 for the price of the low milage 1Ms.
It doesn't have a single one of the nostalgic factors that the "last of a generation" kind of sports cars have. No throttle cable, no NA motor, no hydraulic steering etc.
They are rad, but they are just a slightly less ugly m2.

jmanhas 05-11-2016 12:26 PM

this car has been on the market for a while, and the price just dropped a little more. Priced pretty aggressively

Car was sold for less than $12000 but the current seller is trying to flip the car. I believe there was a large accident on it if I remember correctly.

Correct, which is why I'd never consider one without getting it PPI'd first. The engine bay is so tight that anything major requires pulling it basically. Real pain in the ass and pricey, but when they are taken care of and maintained they're actually pretty solid motors... I miss mine and always have an eye out for them, future classic for sure

underscore 05-11-2016 02:52 PM

300ZX's tend to suffer from neglected maintenance since the engine bays are tight so the labour costs on some repairs are a bit higher. If it's been maintained well, it's no worse than any other car IMO.

I love the 04 since it lets me buy brake rotors without having to redrill them :D

Anyone get a chance to check this car out? Been meaning to, but seems kinda weird no ones jumped on it. All I know is its a foreign import (ex-Japan) according to seller.

cloth seats in a bimmer/benz usually a sure sign its JDM. they must have some aversion to leather

68style 05-11-2016 10:30 PM

Probably the reason it's not sold is it's autotragic

High price, but looks to be in good shape

Had a $15,000 repair on the front end in 06 and owner isn't sure if there was any frame damage.
