They also run drills which let you feel, and exceed the limits of your car, in a safe controlled environment. Its insanely helpful to understand how your car behaves before, during and past the limit, before you learn the hard way on the track with others out there beside you.

Wet qualifying session. Ended up P2 here but fell down the order in the first heat. Climbed back and nagged a couple positions back during the final heat. GoPro wasn't on for the race sessions :/.

How hard is it for someone with zero track experience to get the hang of driving on a track? I know the question is too general but I want to go have a try before I get old. Haha. I suppose having an instructor will help a lot.

it really depends on you and on the instructor (since everyone learns and teaches differently)

i would definitely recommend attending vcmc auto-x or their driving school program first to get the basics down (you will be surprised how many people don't have the basics down yet)

if you want to jump straight into track days and skip auto-x then i would recommend taking a driving school as they will walk you through the course, braking points, apex, etc/

its also very informative to just sit in someone's car at the track just to see what they are doing vs what you think you would do and try to take some notes

as far of getting the hang of driving on the track.. it depends on how hard you push. for most people their first session or 2 starts very slow because they are scared - but as the day progresses you will start to get faster and faster as you familiarize yourself with track. it probably took me 2 track days? or so to fully start pushing at pacific raceways and maybe 2-3 track days to fully overcome The Ridge Motorsport Park elevation changes + blindspots

In addition to VCMC / UBCSCC autox and their autox-centric driving school, another recommendation I would make to add to what kchan has already said is to start local. The Mission Raceway is quite novice friendly, and VCMC as well as UBCSCC typically host track days at Mission between April - Sept.

The VCMC track days aim for a 1-to-1 instructor-to-student ratio, whereas UBCSCC's tend to be slightly higher (1:2 or 1:3?). These would be good places to get your track feet wet, so to speak.

As to the "getting the hang of tracking your car", one really important bit that I'd like to add is -- and I can't stress how often this point gets overlooked -- if you are driving a car with a manual transmission and you cannot heel-toe, I think it is really, really difficult for you to get the hang of tracking your car. Things are just so much more natural if you can already bang off your heel-toe rev match before you go into a turn, and you can actually focus on how to take that turn instead of worrying about how to manage your brakes, your clutch, or whether you are shock punishing your drivetrain.

Thanks kchan and Traum. Think I'll take ur advice and start with basics and go local. My car has flappy paddle gear box so there one less thing to worry about.

when i have instruct people at the track - the first thing i tend to notice is how often people shift gears

i often tell them to worry less about being in the proper gear or power band and just focus on track - do it one step at a time

results? they actually end up a bit faster because they have one less thing to focus on and use it on focusing more on their line, entry, and exit

after that they can slowly apply downshifting etc. to further improve

when i drive the radical on the ridge vs the lotus - i have so much more time to think about what i need to do next for the upcoming turn in the radical than the lotus (despite the radical being tons faster) mainly because it has a sequential gearbox vs manual gearbox in my lotus) and i've had much more experience in the lotus than the radical on the same track

May 8th is at 37/50 for cars

Just went to Laguna Seca in my s2k!

Prior to this I'd been to Mission, Shannonville, and Buttonwillow which are not big tracks. I did go to Mosport once and that experience helped.

PR 1:56.09. Lots of stuff to work on. T8/a and T11 especially, and I'm leaving tons of room at the exits, could probably apex earlier.

any novice do HPDE at both PDC and R&P? sounds like you can't go wrong with either one...problem is neither have weekend dates @ MRP

Speed Fanatics has a lapping day on Sun, April 3 at Mission, and they have a novice group as well. However, it seems like the event is all booked up.

lapping event =/= no 1-on-1 instructors =/= hpde ?
