If you are looking for something that can last the drive to Oliver, hold up at the track, and still come back looking decent all on the same tire, I think the only qualified candidates are Hankook R-S4 and the Dunlop ZII Star Specs. But especially when you are in an MS3, it might make more sense to just pick up an extra set of track tires (NT01, R888R, etc.) and swap them on site.

I'm still a novice track driver. I want to do what I did with autocross and run on "regular" summers before going to "proper" tires (went from PSS to RE71R after a year of events). I don't want a grippy tire hiding mistakes and creating bad habits that more seat time could fix. Hearing ilvtofu's comments on the firestones, I'll probably get those for my next set.

visited the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit yesterday. Amazing track layout and weather. Through out the day i was trying to keep up with the legendary Kodamu san.

Thanks Richard 🙏 . Is a really fun track for lightweight cars like ours!

This is the second session where me and boatcaptain are still learning the track.

Hit my personal best this past weekend at Ridge, did better than I thought!

spoonek4 06-07-2017 08:21 PM

Thank all of u guys that made this June 4th event happened!!

Here's my video:

ilvtofu 06-08-2017 12:17 AM

Like mb_ I did better than I thought, you can hear me squealing like a little girl when I saw my lap time @ 4:15. Thought it was a fluke but I banged out 3 2:00's this session, with an optimal best of 1:59.39. Fastest lap starts around 6:21 which was a 2:00.3

I was expecting to do ~2:03-2:05, ultimately my setup is quite conservative with -1.8 camber all around, Firestone Indy 500 tires, and Stoptech Street Performance pads. Those pads were definitely a weak point (you can see them smoking at the end of the video) but hey after a whole event I barely have any brake dust :P

Hope to invest in some actual track-worthy pads and get it under 1:59 this year :)

My last time running the EK. New owner will be participating in future track days! Looking forward to seeing how it will do in the future. Personal best of 1:59.7 . Optimal time for 2 years of events combined 1:58.1.

Anyone that's free this Friday, the weather is looking fantastic -- sunny and 13 - 28°C. If you're looking for some track time, there'd be plenty of it here.

It'd be most ideal if you were to have a SNELL SA or M certified helmet of your own, in which case you'd just register, make sure your car is road worthy (no fluid leaking / seeping, got tread on your tires, have 50% or more brake pads remaining, etc.), and then show up at the event. Most organizers -- Speed Fanatics here, VCMC, and UBCSCC all do this -- arrange an instructor for the newbie track drivers, and the instructor will show you the ropes about on-track driving as well as track etiquette. In my experience, instructors from the 3 aforementioned groups are almost always very good.

If you don't have a helmet, however, it may or may not be the end of the world. Check with the organizer to see if they have loaner helmets available. But personally, I am a little OCD when it comes to using my own helmet.

Mission is very much a newbie friendly track, although as a "seasoned" track dog, I continue to enjoy it tremendously. Unfortunately, I am not able to go to this particular one on Friday, but Speed Fanatics generally runs a good show (as does VCMC and UBCSCC). So if you can make it this Friday, this would be a good group to go with.

Thanks for the advice. So the instructors are part of the registration fee and they ride with the noobs? It sounds fun but Friday is too late notice for me and I am on the same boat with personal helmets... Hopefully ill be ready for the next event.

Traum 06-22-2017 11:48 AM

Yeah, instructors are part of the package for new track drivers, although in VCMC's case, they used to charge $10 or $20 extra. In exchange for that, VCMC also tends to have a higher instructor-to-student ratio.

For helmets, a current SNELL M grade one (M for motorcycle) is available from any motorcycle store. However, the SA grade (meant for auto racing) is more appropriate for lapping and other motorsports use. Locally, Driver's Edge sells them.

Playing with my friend's CTR. A good shake down run for a completely stock car. So now we know what needs to be addressed
