How cheap can YOU find a replacement engine for your car?

Say if your engine blew up tomorrow and you had to buy a completely new long block, how cheap can you find a replacement?

2nd gen 3SGTE, I've seen them go for around $300-$400. Although, if my engine did blow (AGAIN) I'd go balls out (AGAIN) and get a 4th gen for $4000.

What's the diff?

The new 5.0 would be sweet to install in an E36

Klondike 06-06-2014 01:30 AM

Convert it to electric.

Time article on the same story

There's a lot, but the biggest difference is power; 200 vs 260 stock. There's also a modern ECU, coil packs, and a bunch of new and improved stuff.

white rocket 06-06-2014 07:17 AM

If my engine was stock then I guess the going rate for a B18C5 would be in the $3500 range. But if my current engine blew up tomorrow the caR would get parked permanently. lol!

thumper 06-06-2014 07:23 AM

if my engine went poof... i don't think i would go stock and use it as an excuse to sell the farm and do this:

Let me know when that happens. No point taking up valuable realty. :troll:

500-1000 used for my Subaru, only new ones I can find are Cosworth packages for around 5300.

200-400 used for the Datsuns, rebuilds and engine dress up go for 1600-2000.

meme405 06-06-2014 08:26 AM

I have actually been thinking about this more and more as my FX climbs in km's quite quickly during the summer.

A replacement VQ I can find for less than 1000 bucks, but then I would have to build it up from there which could end up in the thousands (if not 10's of thousands) by the time it is something I would want to cram into my car.

On the flip side anyone who sees the FX's engine bay is shocked by how much room there is; because the car was offered with a V8 option, my v6 just has tons of room around it. With all that extra room, I'm slowly coming to the realization that a built VQ swap (even if it was a 3.7HR motor with the 7 speed) wouldn't be the best route.

I know someone who currently has a relatively new VK5.6. This engine mated to the newer 7 Speed in the QX80's (Or QX56's), would probably be the ultimate swap. That way I have the Gobs of torque, good top end, and if it ever isn't enough, the engine is strong enough to withstand a heavy amount of power, and I have the entire Titan aftermarket behind me. This option would probably range into the same dollar figures as any built VQ or FI VQ setup, but the difference is it would be something nobody has done, and it would be infinitely cooler in my mind. Also more reliable, and easily more power as well.

Another 3.7 from Ford is about ~$2500 brand new, although if the current one blew up i'd Coyote swap it from a wrecked F150/Mustang.

4G63 Tomei 2.3 Genesis Crate motor....

$23k on Ebay :heckno:

JDM 4G63... unknown everything - still $3k....... :heckno:

westopher 06-06-2014 09:50 AM

It wouldn't matter, because I'd be throwing an s54 out of an e46 M3 into it, but it would be 5k for a brand new never run s52 from CG

I'd just rebuild my current motor, but if I completely destroyed it I'd go with a 98+ 5SFE block and build a 5SGTE stroker or a 3rd gen swap. The 4th gen is weaker than the 3rd and has less support anyways.

Or since you've got an MR2 you could do an 3MZ V6 swap, bolts up to your tranny, 230/242 stock + available superchargers. And then there's the option of being totally insane and going 2GR.

Even tho I can pick up another 5.0 for $180 bucks, I'm dreaming about...

I almost built a 5SGTE when my motor blew, but then decided it was too much work in the time I had available and just stuck with a 3S. I know of a couple of good sources for 4th gens, so that won't be much of a problem.

In terms of a V6, I've driven a 1MZ/3MZ one, with a 3MZ longblock and 1MZ parts, and rode in a 2GR powered one. Both go like stink, but the 2GR is definitely the one to go with, and there's a complete adapter kit that lets you pretty much drop it in to the MR2 bay. You need to come down to a coffee meet one of these days, immorality is always taking people for joyrides in his 2GR MR2. Needless to say, I hated driving my 3S back home LOL.

So a 266 hp V6 bolts right up to the MR2 manual tranny?
