Celebration of Light 2014

No thread yet for this year?

Went last night to see USA. Thought they did a great job. One of the better shows I've seen.

Now, who was the idiot flying the drone trying to get up close with the fireworks? I can't imagine it was officially there based on the way/where it was flying. Hard to miss with the bright red/green LEDs.

Did this guy not think that perhaps an officer would just follow it to where it landed so they could find out who it was?

TOS'd 07-27-2014 08:55 AM

Not from last night, kinda c00l:

dangonay 07-27-2014 09:37 AM

^ Saw that, and the person from last night probably did too. There's no doubt the view from the drone was fantastic, but still risky. Imagine a dead drone falling a couple hundred feet onto someone in the crowd.

TOS'd 07-27-2014 09:43 AM

I wasn't there so I don't know how close it was to people and if it was directly over them. But if it was anything like the video, it would've been a loss to only the operator if it fell into the water.

Anyways, looking forward to wednesday, haven't gone down to see one of these for a couple of years now.

BillyBishop 07-27-2014 10:30 AM

I was there maybe 100 feet off of Beach Ave. Was the synchronization with the music any good? I couldn't really tell because I couldn't hear anything besides someone's cell phone streaming 20 feet away.

As an aside, I noticed a green laser pointer throughout the evening being pointed at various things like stray balloons, the TV camera tower, etc. Two years ago I was flying over the fireworks and was targeted by a laser along with several other aircraft; I think it goes without saying that this is extremely dangerous. If anybody notices somebody on the ground using a high powered laser pointer, I urge you to take action.

If anyone wants to see it

Same shit, different day.

JSALES 07-27-2014 11:42 AM

The last time I went to see the fireworks was in high school lol

vafanculo 07-27-2014 12:26 PM

Best fireworks I seen were at edc. I haven't heard much buzz about it in the media either, though. I recall hearing radion ads and news advertising for previous ones.

Vansterdam 07-27-2014 12:39 PM

^ so true lol once you see fireworks at EDC aint nothing compares to it

etodac 07-28-2014 06:32 PM

Can you hear the music well from places other than English Bay?

Hondaracer 07-28-2014 07:06 PM

heard multiple people say this past USA show was the best theyve ever seen

typically i cant be bothered to make my way down there these days though, cant stand the crowds

meme405 07-28-2014 09:14 PM

After that video came out like a month ago you better get used to having some idiot try and fly a drone into like every firework display.

For the most part the drone will be over the water when it is at the most risk of being brought down by the actual explosions.

When it is flying over the crowd it would be exactly like any other drone flight, even like the ones that fly over car meets pretty often. There is the risk it could fail and fall, but its pretty minor if the operator isn't an idiot.

So for the most part the TOS'd is correct the main risk to the drone is that the owner would lose a $1500+ piece of equipment.

in san diego they have fireworks out of seaworld EVERYNIGHT ALL SUMMER LONG

cramming on to a beach with 200,000 other people? :fuckthatshit:

also makes me wonder why celebration of light is so expensive to host, i mean if seaworld can afford to put up decent shows every night, it can't be that expensive...

Adrenaline Rush 07-28-2014 11:26 PM

Seaworld also charges $50 to $80 for admission so they have a lot of resources to work with. I heard it costs about about 100,000 just for the fireworks, nevermind organizational costs like policing and cleanup.

SoNaRWaVe 07-28-2014 11:42 PM

disneyworld did it for me. saw the fireworks there 3 nights in a row.

fireworks here just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Gazorcoop 07-29-2014 12:27 AM

My ex convinced me that fireworks are a waste of time; they're the same every year. Maybe it was an excuse to not go with me, because now apart, our opinions have flipped.

Having said that, I would probably go for the hell of it. Even though it's nothing compared to fireworks elsewhere, it's still the "best light show" in Vancouver.

Verdasco 07-29-2014 12:40 AM

you guys are comparing fireworks, no one goes for the fireworks, just the fun with other people ..... ole vancouver nitpickers in this thread

don't forget the risk to the people working on the fireworks barge, if the drone drops on to them. and yes there are people on there working while the fireworks are going off. that was the major safety hazard that i heard. since the drone can be very easily brought down by the explosions

the fireworks are great, lol i'm glad the city puts on something like this every year. I used to go when I was in hs, and yes, it was an awesome experience with friends.

nowadays i just hate the clusterfuck event that it is. lol i just don't see myself or my friends enjoying ourselves in that huge crowd. I had my fun with it, now i'd have to be paid a lot of money to show up there.

ilovebacon 07-30-2014 01:12 PM

dont know about you but i go for having sand kicked into my towel and the sardine packing on the streets when the show ends. :ilied:

on a serious note, i remember people going apeshit when we almost lost sponsorship years back. Even though I haven't gone for years I appreciate having a large scale summer event in town...for free.
