Winter Jacket Recommendations
 

Anyone know any good jackets for winter?
Preferable less than $200/$300?

x2 for this question. I have an Esprit down bomber that served me well these past couple years but it's time to rock something new.

got my winter jacket at GAP last year for around that price. Decent and keeps me warm but make sure to check the zippers.

If you'll be braving the rain, I would get something with a gore shell.

EDIT: Goose down is the best insulator you can find, but it's a natural fibre that will break down over time. If you want something that will last longer, you might want to try a synthetic insulator such as primaloft. But you won't find a synthetic insulated jacket in that price range.

Is North Face that good? If it keeps me warm I guess.. even though everyone has one lol :suspicious:

In my experience, the quality of North Face has taken a nose dive over the years. They're great for a season or two (if you're lucky) then you start noticing seams coming apart and all sorts of build quality problems. Having said that, not all North Face jackets suffer from this problem so unfortunately, it's more of a "luck of the draw" type of problem.

Having said that, if you have a specific budget in mind and you have a specific set of criteria to meet, there are other alternatives. Start asking yourself some basic questions:

- Does it have to be light?
- Can I use it for layering?
- Does it have to be breathable?
- Does it need to be waterproof or water resistant?
- Do I want to look like a thug mall rat in a poofy jacket?

Start by looking at websites like backcountry.com (as DragonChi posted above) and do your homework from there. Good luck.

I might be buying one for the winter

if you can justify the price for it and are solely looking for a vest sure. if you just want it for the heatscore style points, sure. if you just want a warm vest/jacket, then there are so many cheaper alternatives for half the price. (and you wont look like a douchebag)

I know a buddy who works at a sportchek so he said he could get me one discounted which is the reason why I'm opting for a canada goose.

Nike Shox are excellent for keeping your feet warm in the winter too

I've had this one for 2 years and I LOVE it. its so warm and comfy. im sure you can find it at a local skate store for cheaper. mine was on sale last year but I paid $400

Dussault hats are made of some pretty good insulating material to keep your head warm. Don't forget a versatile Hugo Boss murse to store your black, wool gloves in as well

Frostbite on your hands is not a good time

backcountry, are the prices in US$ or CDN?

If you ever decide to purchase from them, keep in mind the following:

1. They have a kick ass return policy (read the fine print though.)
2. They normally ship via UPS which means you WILL get ass raped when it comes in to Canada
3. You have the option of shipping using USPS, but it costs a bit extra sometimes.
4. You can ship it to Blaine/Point Roberts to save on shipping costs/duties etc.

If you decide to ship to Canada using UPS, typically they will charge you for the taxes on the dollar value of the item (GST/PST,) duty (usually 18% if the clothing item is made outside of CAN/US/MEX,) and a brokerage fee, which is what you get raped on which can vary depending on the dollar value.

that jacket is sick they had xxxl

its weird the website says xl is the largest and I ended up getting an xxl

Why not just wear a nice wool pea/trench/military coat and layer it with wool sweaters and scarves? I'd much rather do that then wear a really thick jacket with just a t shirt underneath lol

but if you're not into that, then just get eddie bauer down jacket and get one of their fleeces to wear under it. Should cost you no more than 300

Some people have the brave the weather so having a nice wool pea/trech/ coat is not a good idea. I usually wear my GAP or my Columbia jacket that's water resistant since I take the skytrain to work so have to walk maybe 5mins.

I also wear a pair of Merrell Men's Moab Gore-Tex Waterproof Hiking Shoe in the winter. Keeps my feet dry and warm even in the rain. Also it doesn't slip on ice which is a plus.
