Panhandler caught on video getting into a new Fiat
A 78 year old woman in Oklahoma City was panhandling at an intersection was caught by a guy getting into her brand new Fiat. Guy who gives her money all the time loses his shit.
The local news gets a hold of her and she flips out and refuses to talk about it, and is seen back at the same intersection.
This makes me so fuckin mad. I remember a time downtown Vancouver where a guy approached me, on the verge of tears, saying he was American and his passport was stolen in Stanley Park. His hotel was in Richmond, he just needed bus fare to get back there. For whatever reason, because he looked scared, and his story was detailed, I believed him. I didn't have change, but all I had was $5. Which was a lot to me at the time.
I saw him no less than 2 weeks later approaching people in the same area, and have seen him years later downtown still begging.
When I saw that little fucker on the street, I wanted to confront and just pound the fuck out of his shithead little face, expose him etc...But all I ended up doing was be jaded towards anyone who panhandles.
I don't want to believe these are fucked up street smart crackheads who scam people, but I guess so many are.
Really makes you question your instinct to give and help others sometimes.

I dont give to panhandlers because I dont want them to think begging money as good source of income. If they see they dont get money, they will do something else more productive.... hopefully not stealing though...

Work for my money, why should anyone get it from me for free.
That's the problem though. That's a bad, selfish attitude. Why should you give your money away for free? Because the occasional $2 is a lot of money to someone with nothing, and you probably wouldn't notice it missing.
I'm just tryin to raise a discussion around this, and see what people's responses are. I understand your position, but I don't agree with it.
Maybe it's just a matter of finding a way to give that you know will go to something helpful.

The homeless guys in downtown make like $20 an hour or something. When I used to work at the Scotia theater, there was (maybe he's still there) this guy who would take off all of his clothes(except shorts and pants), put it underneath the trashcan where he "worked" and when it was very late at night, I sometimes saw him hail a taxi and put on a fkn peacoat looking fly as fuck

i think the answer is pretty simple, and many other members here have gone that route. Instead of giving money, buy people in need food, give them clothing, etc.
Anyone who is down and out and outright refuses anything but cash can fuck right off imo

The guy (I forget his name) who used to "Pan Handle" at the intersection of Hastings and the Eastbound HWY 1 exit, openly admitted on the news to making upwards of a $400 a day, and people continued to support him.
Now there was a couple items at work here. First off, he was a genuine person, he waved and smiled at everyone and never went up to your window or stared you down unless you made it obvious you wanted to give him money. He never held a BS sign with crap on it, and he never asked for money, he just waited there. Next off he kept that intersection clean as fuck, like he would weed between the cracks of the curb, he swept off the median. He cleaned debris out of the intersection, etc. Compared to the other curb right on the other side, his side looked much better. Those are only a couple reasons why he was such a successful "pan handler".
The reason I use quotation marks is because this guy was way more than just someone who begged others for money. I still remember when he passed away there was no memorial, but I sure missed seeing him every morning.
Now instead there is some shirtless degenerate who tries to clean my fucking window every morning with dirty water. Yo asshole, my fucking car is spotless every damn day. Don't touch it, and if you lean on my car with your fucking 8" belt buckle one more time, i'm gonna hop out and use your face to polish my shoes.
EDIT: Just found one of the stories about him, the name was Jerry:
I was on my way to McD one time, the weather was kind of cloudy.
I saw a homeless guy sitting on the sidewalk asking for change, so I asked if he wanted food instead?
He looked pretty desperate so since I was already on the way to McD, I just bought an extra cheeseburger.
And they had free small coffee promo at the time too, so I got that as well.
It only took about 5-10 mins, but it was raining by the time I left McD.
I went back to the spot which wasn't covered and the guy was missing
Then I continued walking down the street and spotted him standing by a building that had an awning.
Never believe those guys with too detailed of a story.
It's like they have it all planned out like an artform which is sick.
You'll see the same guy there every day with the same story.
Which is also the same reason why "Nigerian Prince" scams are so detailed and planned out...

My memory is a bit hazy on a similar story, but I seem recall a news article from a few years ago, where people were spotted rummaging through peoples recyling bins and stuff intended for good will in West Van while driving around in luxury vehicles.
I always give out whatever change I got in my pockets or whatever's in my cup holder if driving.
You don't know what people are going through in their lives.
Sure some might be a scam like this woman but some are legit and are human beings just like you and I but out of their luck.
Even if they were fake it still makes me feel better inside because it's the gesture that counts, that I tried to help another human being. And I know I'll be blessed in other ways, or karma if that's what you believe in.
Is a little change really gonna put a dent in your pocket?
theres pan handlers there everyday. if your facing north, on the north east corner of the intersection, there was one of those big green bc hydro boxes on the ground. there used to be a dozen signs back there all saying similar things. at the end of the day the panhandlers would just put the sign behind it and grab a fresh one in the morning.
they sit there with dogs, or there was once 2 girls that were there everday for MONTHS, sign said something about not from canada, broke, trying to get home. each week they'd have new hair dye, hair going from bright blue to pink to purple. piercings all over their face, and different clothes each day.
id love to sit back and watch them where they go at night time. odds are its just a bunch of people on workers comp or disability who are to lazy to go get real jobs. i bet they go back to a basement suite, apartment, or at least get in a car thats parked 4 blocks away.
yeah food is the way to go. Yesterday i went to dollarama and i saw a hobo sitting outside with a nickel in his hat. So i went in dollarama and got him a coke, a twix a mars bar and a bag of bugles. He was so fucken happy.
^^backfired on me. there is a homeless guy always chillin inside RBC after hours(atm machines) across richmond centre and I thought id buy him coffee and muffin, so I did and handed it to him but for some reason he got mad lol. I was pissed yo...

I give this lady at 41st and oak some change (at least $10) she came up with a sob story and was basically keep talking to me so I just give her all my change lol. I was in a good mood that day so she got lucky.
Usually I just keep walking and pretend they are not there. You never what what that $2 will do for you. Sometimes you just need those change to get you a coffee at McDonalds.
AFAIK a lot of them are living at the low cost housing / motel in the South East corner of the intersection. 401 or something?

Theres always this one long hair male on marine drive waiting to turn left onto cambie. I offered him a banana and he straight up said "no thanks im not into bananas". I was like whatever floats your boat.
Every time light changes to red in the left turn lanes he walks up and down the island looking into every car. Sometimes i wonder if they are secretly undercover cops checking for texting

this. fucking raged when i told him to stop and he wouldnt stop.
he insisted and told me its on the house.
got out of the car and he stepped away, while his crack whore junkie gf was on the other side going "FUCK YOU MAN".
drove by her and called her a crack whore, did not feel bad at all.
they have arms and legs in fine working order so why dont u guys go fucking get a job.
I don't believe in giving the homeless money. I never have, because I don't truly know what it will be used for. I believe in giving them food; something that I know in my mind will help them more than money can.

I don't give anything because I won't enable their behavior. The government can take care of them as far as I am concerned. I don't see people dying left and right.

+ 1. I never give money to homeless people. I either donate my time at the soup kitchen, give them food or clothing.
As a kid, I grew up VERY poor (shietty food, heat never on in winter type of poor)) and the only xmas present I ever got was the stuff that my mom would get from the toy donation places. To this day, I always donate toys during xmas time to pay it forward.
The one thing that bugs me is the Asian people that come in to toy drives and food banks to get free food/toys and then load it up into their Mercedes / BMW SUV.
