My friend had a set on last year but they didn't perform well in the ice patch in his back lane. They have deep treads which are probably good in deep snow, but IMO, not enough siping for traction. If you come across the first gen Goodyear Nordic with the square treads, it's best to stay away from it because the design is outdated and the last production year was 2011 iirc.

Two other good brands that CT sells for a pretty good price are General Arctic Altimax and Continental WinterContact. They have plenty of siping for traction and should do well in wet and fairly ok in icy conditions (considering if you don't have studs, you'll still be slipping a bit but way better than A/S). Personally i have a set of the Generals on my car and it was a blast last winter. Obviously winter tires arent magic but it was great driving past those cheap guys who decided they didn't want to invest in winter tires. The WinterContacts just came out last year when i was still at CT, the tread pattern looks pretty great and felt pretty soft, i think they're a good choice as well.

Canadian Tire has the WinterContact SI on sale right now as well.

Very good winter tire

CT has Duratracs 25% off right now as well, if anyone is looking for them.

Costco has instant savings on some of their tires.
They seem to be inline with the manufacturer mail in rebates though.

Does anyone know how does that work? Are those legit instant savings that apply when you pay, or is it just their way of trying to advertise a lower price online (assuming you'll mail in your rebate afterward)?

I'm trying to see if I can get instant savings, and on top, get more savings with the manufacturer's mail in rebate. :fullofwin:

When I bought my Pirellis from Costco in April, it was an instant $100 savings (pre-tax).

UnknownJinX 10-07-2017 07:40 PM

Put the Nokian Hak R2 on today.

Bill turned out to be ~$1300 with tax. The tires are $277 each before tax in 225/45/18 size, which is used for the S1 RX-8 OEM rims I have.

They had a $50 rebate for the set.

I'm trying to order some tires from Costco but at online checkout it says: Due to inventory changes, item <number here> in your cart is no longer available. This item cannot be purchased at this time.

Is this an around the way message for sold out? I wonder if I can order them in store...

From my understanding Costco does the MIR for you, and just gives you the savings up front.

The RCMP were on the S2S Highway yesterday checking tires already - trying to drive the message that proper tires are required this time of year. Many people were turned around with their performance summer tires, trying to go up to the Turkey Sale. Ironically, motorbikes are exempt but are urged to use proper discretion on what may be unsafe driving conditions and may to turned around at the officer's discretion.

How much should I expect to pay for 16" steelies?
Most places don't seem to advertise them. Or Costco has a few choices but all they list is product code numbers with different prices, but with no pics. Not even sure if there are any differences.

$50-75 per rim depending on where you get them?

I have 16's for sale depending on what your dimensions are

$20-$25 per on CL is the going rate.

snowfarmer 10-08-2017 06:17 PM

What car are they going on, is it a rare or unusual BCD/CB? If not, CL is awash in used alloys for most vehicles. Get something that looks way better than steelies for the same $ as a new set of steelies.

CT steelies are about $45 - $50 each for most applications. They used to stock OES rims so if you manage to find some NOS, you're set.
However, i would NOT recommend the steelies they sell now. It's a brand called RSSW and they come bnib wobbly as hell, regardless of being "multi-fit" or "OE-fit". Trust me, i've had to spend extra time balancing those wheels and they usually take more than 3-4 ounces, which is a lot for a passenger vehicle. The rims seem to be heavier, thick soft metal when compared to OE rims.
Definitely not very good quality, unless it doesn't really matter for your application

Digitalis 10-08-2017 07:29 PM

For 400$ more i'm on my second set of PA4 this time i'm really going to put the 50k mile warranty to the test. My first set was bought from tirerack usa so wasn't worth the hassle of trying to get it claimed. I prob only got 10k out of them at the 500awhp range.

I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole, everyone says they are noisy as hell. Tires are an investment for a few years at least. And $650 isn't really that cheap, you can get a lot for that amount.

yray 10-08-2017 08:18 PM

Isn't there a triangle oem store by shell and westminster?

320icar 10-08-2017 09:15 PM

Offshore tires have their uses. I plan to pick up a set to totally wreck and burn on that way I know first hand. But from the cheap Chinese tires I’ve installed before on other cars, they are super light and the sidewalls are hilariously thin and flexible. Build quality is not comparable to Bridgestone/michelin/falken/Continental

iKayChow 10-09-2017 06:35 AM

Does anyone have any review/opinion on Blacklion BL4S All Weather Tires from OKTire or the Nokian Nordman WR All Weather Tires from Kaltire?

Girlfriend's car is needing some new all seasons, but she also wants winters, but doesn't think she will be driving in a snow storm, but wants the comfort knowing her tires would be decent in the snow if she were to make small trips.

So far the West Lake winters I have are on par with the noise level of Uniroyal winters I used last year. I know that they put a little more into advertising so knock on wood for higher quality China tires once the snow hits .

2018 mazda3 GS. Aesthetics don't matter, but just trying to save as much money as I can. I would even consider going 15" but I'm not sure if they clear the brakes and I can't figure out the proper 15" wheels spec for matching the oem diameter. 205/60r16.
How close do wheel sizes need to match without affecting the odometer?

underscore 10-09-2017 09:16 AM

^ use this. Punch your stock size in on the left and play around with sizes on the right, it shows all the differences at the bottom. https://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp

Do you have the West Lake SW606 Winters? I am getting a good deal on a new set of them and was wondering if they're even worth buying. Would you recommend them as a cheap winter tire?

snowfarmer 10-09-2017 10:41 AM

What about these?

https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/pml/...311307134.html

Go put $300 in cash in front of the seller (in person not over email) and I'd bet you'd have those rims. Do whatever you want with the tires. A set of 4 new steelies will cost you $224 (4x $50 +tax). Not much more for a set of alloys. Sell the tires for $100 and get your outlay down even further?
