Intoxicating Exhaust Notes, where to look?

Just wanted to poll the audience,

I'm in love with the exhaust note of the Jaguar F-type.

I also like the new M3, and recently heard one modified by Performance One with what looks to be an Akrapovic exhaust and midpipe that also sounded absolutely great.

Both these cars would be a hoot to drive fast, but I most like the fact that even at moderate driving speeds, they can both sound amazing. I think it's the crackle of the overrun that's the intoxicating bit.

Probably not something I can buy in the near future, but I can aspire right? I was wondering if you guys have any other recommendations of cars that sound as good as these two I could look into.

just to be clear- you are asking which cars you could buy with nice exhaust notes that are cheaper than the two aforementioned cars, yes

i'm also in LOVE with the crackles and pops that the f-type r's exhaust makes..

:sweetjesus:

this is also intoxicating in its own right,

also this,

Buying a car simply for the sound it makes, ignoring everything else would be a huge mistake.

Buy a car for how it performs, how it looks, and how it sounds, a whole package. If it doesn't sound quite the way you want it to, that can always be fixed with aftermarket parts afterwards.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, most of the new turbocharged cars with dual-clutch transmissions have a sudden fuel cut-off when downshifting/up shifting that's why there's a pop or crackle, and the F-Type just purposely runs rich therefore it pops and crackles that much? Correct me if I'm wrong.

If you're looking for exhaust sound...get a Ferrari.
348, F355 and 360 Modena are becoming "affordable"
308 and 328 will also give you classic sound of Ferrari. Mondial, Dino GT4 are considered as entry level Ferrari but not my favorite.

360 Modena

F355

348

OP you may be the first person in the world to compliment the new m3/m4s exhaust note. That car is a LOT of amazing things, but compared to previous generations, its sound is probably the worst out of all of them. Every review of them so far has complained about it.
So therefore my recommendation for a cheaper car that sounds good is any m3 other than the new one.
Lol @ this video. Track day with a full cage and no helmet.

Oh no, I agree that the stock new M3/M4 exhaust note is nothing to write home about. It was specifically the pictured Sakir Orange M4 with the Akrapovic exhaust that gave it a more distinctive sound I liked a ton.

And yeah, the intent of the original post was a run down of potential cars that sound great, that I possibly haven't come across yet that may be in the same price range or lower.

350z or G35/37
I always admire thire VQ35 exhaust note sounds.

Subbie boxer rumbles :sweetjesus: that exhaust note lets you know its a subbie without even looking

Akinari 02-19-2015 01:33 PM

Lol at Timpo saying old Ferraris are becoming affordable. While true, you are entirely forgetting the fact that it costs over $5000 a year for maintenance, on a good day when nothing fails, and there's a lot of things that are prone to failing in a 355.

Subaru rumble and Nissan's VQ exhausts sound terrific.

I really like the distinct Boxer engine exhaust note. As some one once said, "Sounds like a 50 gallon barrel filled with rubber balls rolling down a hill". Anything Ferrari or Porsche(both air and water cooled) have a distinct sound to them.

BrRsn 02-19-2015 02:12 PM

G35/G37 sound too manufactured IMO. It's distinct, I'll give it that.

If I had to pick one, probably this:

To this day still the most epic roar I have experienced IRL was from the now obsolete naturally aspirated 6.3L from the C63 AMG. Don't get me wrong...I like boost...but that engine is just pure...well...engine. The exhaust note from that motor and out the back was so raw...made the hairs on my neck stand up!

What's the point of this thread again?

I am quite aware of Ferrari maintenance cost as I am always on FerrariChat.com

Of course European cars will be unreliable, especially Italians, but BMW M3 and Jaguar F-Type are not known to be a reliable car on the road either.

Yes, the maintenance cost will be expensive and you have to be ready for occasional $10-15k repair, but again, other European cars are not that reliable.

Also check out this guy's channel, he always talks about how to afford a supercar and exotics can be cheaper than modified Japanese cars too.

One of the best exhaust notes IMO
