FWD cars? The ZF FWD unit is even more trash. It’s basically Aisin, even more trash ZF, weak Ford/GM unit 9 speed, or a CVT

Only RS would discuss transmission like a F1 engineer in a minivan thread.

Isn't the 8 speed transverse made by Aisin? Toyota affiliated, but not wholly owned?

Either ways, it sucks in the Minis, BMW is a tiny bit better. BMW mostly transitioned to 7DCT, which is a whole different bag of rocks.

Oh what's wrong with their DCT?

The current X1 are all DCT7, we had one for a loaner and it takes some getting used to.

When start stop engages, the clutch is disengaged completely. So the light turns green, you let off the gas, engine starts and settles, then the clutch engages before you can accelerating away. It's not a particularly long duration, but enough to be frustrating, and for a lot of typical drivers they would keep calling for more pedal since the car isn't moving and once it engages the car surges forward.

The gear changes are also not particularly snappy either so you don't really get a win with DCT. For a commuter the DCT isn't a particularly good fit and ZF8 is a lot better, but X1 is a FWD based vehicle, so no ZF8.

How much better does it get if you simply disabled engine start-stop?

Idk why the 8 speed was SO slow on a JCW countryman.

In X1 it was smooth in a cold Toronto morning, banging farts on upshifts and pretty quick downshifts by the time I got west of that massive bump on the Gardiner leaving downtown

I do not get the German obsession (particularly Audi) with putting DCTs into their commuter/DD trim levels when a torque converter auto is available and just as good. The DCT in the A4 (and related) just makes the driveability worse.

I hate to say it, but CVT in Toyota hybrids make a lot of sense for city driving. Perfectly smooth, great on gas, boring as fuck.

I guess the A4 could've used the ZF8 but they Audi's got special AWD packaging/their own transfer cases.

The latest gen 5 CVT is a lot more responsive.

The old Prius CVT where u had to wait a whole second for response was not that suitable for driving imo

People shove the 2GR into MR2s and Celicas with manual transmissions all the time. There are shops in the US now that have gone from general Toyota shops to only doing 2GR swaps into MR2s because it's so popular.

Someone figured out how to get the AWD Celica transmission to clear the 2GR as well. If anything happens to my Celica and the wifes Rav at the same time maybe I'll merge them into one vehicle lol.

It's too bad the transverse and longitudinal mount 2GR are different, otherwise a DI 2GR-FSE with 306hp from factory would be awesome. There's also no carbon deposit concerns either as they are dual injection.

Still waiting for someone to put a 2GR FSE in a 1G IS300.

I don't know what the differences are between them, but if it's all up top you might be able to just swap the heads and ancillaries needed and make it happen. Apparently the transverse 2GR-FE can free up quite a bit of power just from an intake + headers + exhaust and get them over 300hp. With a few more things Frankenstein Motorworks has gotten an MR2 to 330WHP.

Unfortunately I can only relay this info second hand as my wife won't let me modify her Rav for some ridiculous reasons like not wanting it to be louder.

I’ve been seriously considering straight pipping my Camry and leaving everything else stock. The noise would be deafening and nobody would expect it from a very stock and boring looking car.

It's never gonna be not funny to have a very loud unexpected car drive by. I saw a Prius drive by once and it was LOUD and with the CVT it was unmistakable.

A friend has a RX350 with a cat back and it is stupid loud, and yet so ridiculous at the same time.

Wtf, RAV4s came with 2GRs?! That seems wildly OP for an unassuming small crossover lol.

Yeah it was available in the 3rd gen. These days more cars have more power or better transmissions, but back when it was newer it was great for dealing with those clowns who try to match your speed when you're passing them on the highway. They really don't like getting left behind on the hills by a baby blue soccer mom car.

The V6 RAV4s (2008-2013? I think?) were secret pocket rockets. Those things were damn fast, and only the Ecoboost Escape had a chance of staying in sight.

The 2GR Rav4 was the fastest 0-60 Toyota in North America for a bit because the Camry can't put power down and you can't defeat traction control on them. It was fast enough from a dig to beat a V6 Cayenne of that era.

Toyota pretty much threw the 2GR in everything. In Japan you could get a Blade Master G, which was a Corolla hatchback with the 2GR.
