What internet plan/provider do you guys use?

Thinking of switching to shaw.

Live at home, internet/cable/home phone with telus amounts to about $200 a month. 4 people live here. maybe like $60 for internet, $60 for cable, $20 for phone, then taxes and other fees.

25mb speed, 250gb transfer data cap. we hit 248gb last month and telus wants us to pay more to get a bigger data cap. apparently every internet provider is like this.

so..don't know much about this. what are our best options? switch to shaw and be done with it?

do a decent amount of gaming so would like good reliable internet.

Im on shaw Broadband 50. 50mb/s down 3mb/s up 400gb cap. Been pretty reliable for me, i do get the advertised speeds. Downside is it costs 85 bucks :okay:
No issues with gaming tho

CIK Telecom, 25/2.5Mbps, Unlimited, $29.95/month. Been with them for almost a year, suffered downtime once for 3 hours, and the problem was on their end.

internet is expensive in canada

unlimited for that cheap? what's the downside. why doesn't everyone choose them?

sounds amazing.

Downside is I need to purchase my own modem, deal with Indian-accented tech support from New Delhi (mind you, so far so good, with the one issue that I had, as it was a fault on their end), or a Chinese-accented support tech from Toronto. No paper billing, straight automatic bank transfer (monthly). I had one downtime so far in about a year of being a customer. When they do server maintenance, I actually receive a heads up that they are gonna do it. Connection is slightly slower and I don't mean by data speed. I mean in terms of internet connectivity/the path the data takes between your computer and the destination. If you perform a traceroute to the same IP address between Shaw and CIK from the same location. CIK will take more hops to get to the destination than Shaw. A simple fix would be to use a different DNS and a VPN (I use PIA from RS). Ping times are slightly slower than Shaw (like 5-10ms difference, this matters if you're a heavy gamer). That's all I can think of for now, and I save $50/month for the first year on this package (Shaw would charge me about $80/month on this package and it's not even unlimited). $39.95/month after the first year.

EDIT: Actually saving $60/month as I will need the Internet 60 package from Shaw, not because I need the speed, but because I use about 400GB/month and their Internet 30 package only comes with 250GB. Weak!

Yeah I've got Telus too. 150gb cap iirc. I don't stream HD videos so I should be okay. I mostly game or browse reddit and so far it's been pretty reliable. I had shaw before and it was pretty choppy.

If you're scared about going over your cap, just go on mytelus and keep tabs on it.

knight604 03-05-2015 02:10 PM

Internet is Telus 50 on fiber optics.

Telus has always been good for me, a few downtime but nothing too serious and I always get advertised speeds. After getting fiber the connection is even more stable than before

Got 50% off from student plan for a year, pay about 40$

TOPEC 03-05-2015 03:44 PM

just curious hows internet/tv with telus since they switched over to optic? i rmb back in the ADSL days weather would affect internet/tv

knight604 03-05-2015 04:29 PM

Zero problems on fiber.

willystyle 03-05-2015 07:17 PM

Telus's fiber is only available for apartments/condos right?

jing 03-05-2015 07:27 PM

^ Poco is the only jurisdiction with fibre widely available iirc

heisenberg 03-05-2015 08:03 PM

we use shaw. bill is like $76 a month. with Internet 30, and Personal TV. No one really watches tv, so we went to the bare minimum. Internet, 30mbs down 2.5mbs up. cap at 250gb. We've gone over our cap every single month with no extra charge. In January we hit 400gb, and no call or warning.

According to my friend who works at shaw, you get warnings if youre consistently over your data cap. He has a 500gb cap, and has gone like 4 months in a row at 1000gb a month, and they just called and told him to "slow down"

And that's why I said widely available since fiber is available city wide in poco whereas only pockets in other areas have fiber

is there an official rate they say they will charge us?

because telus did the same thing before, never enforced the data caps, then one day they decided to. and nothing we can do because technically they have the right to.

sounds like shaw may do that at any given moment which is why im hesitant to switch.

u get a verbal warning or 2, then if u go over again they'll just upgrade ur internet plan to the next tier. i believe it reverts back at the next billing cycle tho i THINK.

Reeyal 03-09-2015 07:21 AM

I'm using Telus, and I've gone over the bandwidth cap many times. I haven't yet received a warning or a phone call. (Knock on wood).

If you login into telus, under internet usage you can add on unlimited internet for 30 dollars with no tv or 15 dollars with tv. TELUS Internet data allowances, Internet overage charges | Help | TELUS.com

TWC boosts its internet speeds to counter Google Fiber

now y cant google fiber come here, that'll force everyone to up their speeds, 200Mbps for the price of 50Mbps anyone?!? although tbh with 100Mbps down right now n i dont have much use for it as bandwidth gets chewed up pretty fast

twitchyzero 04-13-2015 08:03 PM

anyone went over their telus cap last month and got charged for it? Will they give you a warning first?
my roommate's gone for months and I won't be able to tell if I got dinged...I managed to rack up 666GB in March :lol
