firing Lawrence Gilman and Mike Burnstein really ticked me off.... I think it's one of those things that will give the Canucks a bad rep in the league as a team to work for for many years
This is despite a 2nd unit PP that WD kept together all season and into the playoffs ... that scored 3 (THREE) goals all season. Despite Sbisa being absolutely terrible (thankfully not so much this year) but continuing to get 2nd pairing minutes. Despite constant line change bungles resulting in penalties and odd-man rushes against (that continues this season). All obvious knocks on coaching.
The result:
Eric Crawford (director of player personnel, 17 years with the Canucks) - fired
Lawrence Gilman (assistant general manager, 8 years with the Canucks) - fired
Lorne Henning (vice president of player personnel and assistant general manager, 9 years with the Canucks) - fired
Mike Burnstein (head athletic trainer, 20 years with the Canucks) - fired
This year:
On pace for 79 points, 23rd overall
The result:
Everyone is assured job security with 1/4 of the disaster of a season left! Hurrah!
Gilman was also Gillis' right hand man and in most circles a very well respected exec around the league.
The only reason that all those guys got fired was because they weren't "yes men" and couldn't fall in line to what Benning and/or AQ wanted. There's a reason why this team sucks so much this year both on the ice and off the ice. They don't have anyone within the organization at an executive level that is willing to demonstrate constructive criticism. Benning took offence to the difference of opinion that Gilman, Lenning, and Crawford had in regards to hockey ops and that's why they were canned. Burnstein being fired was a huge WTF move that everyone in the media openly criticized. This was a guy that knew what he did and was so good in his role that he was hired to be the head trainer for Team Canada in 2010. Can't get much more in terms of respect than that.
There could be a few reasons as to why Canucks management feels the need to cut ties with members of their hockey operations and training staff. The first being that it certainly wasn't the smoothest year for initial diagnosis of Canucks injures; Zack Kassian, Brad Richardson and Ryan Miller all generated a significant amount of curiosity from the fans and media as to what was really up with their respective injuries. Was there a potential riff between one of the players, or player's agents with Burnstein or a member of the Canucks coaching staff, team doctors or management? It's definitely possible -- just think back to the whole Cody Hodgson misdiagnosed back situation (oddly enough, Kassian suffered from a bad back this past season). A second and highly more likely scenario is that Franseco Aquilini is making significant financial cuts to his staff as it's widely anticipated that the Canucks will miss out on the playoffs next season and Aquilini will lose out on any playoff revenue, not to mention season ticket reneawels and merchandise by trading away fan favourite and likeable personalities in Eddie Lack, Kevin Bieksa and Zack Kassian. 20 years of Mike Burnstein adds up financially, and this makes a ton of sense when you consider that Eric Crawford, Laurence Gillman and Lorne Henning were let go yesterday.
I can safely speak for all Canucks fans and say thank you for all the years you gave the Canucks organization, Mike!

I was just reading on HFBoards the other day that he had apparently made major strides in his game and was finally starting to look like a legit prospect. He apparently won the fastest skater competition at the Kalamazoo Wings skills competition in December, which shows how far his skating has come (was initially considered his biggest flaw).

lol, holy fuck throw WD to the dogs before any thought? I agree a lot of things he does makes you scratch your head, but maybe throw another possibility out there.
MAYBE, they are trying to increase his value before the end of the season to possibly trade his rights.. He has improved, maybe enough for a team to consider acquiring him before he becomes a RFA.
I feel bad for Daniel having to play with Etem and Vey.
