several years ago, there was one around Abby/states can't remember exactly, but it shook longer and more intense than this one just now, woke me up, only to find my family already in my room trying to wake me :lol

this is why you create your own kit

Listening to news1130, the past hour has been about the quake.

Was reminded that a 9.0 earthquake would be 15,000x stronger than the one that occurred tonight.

Armind 12-29-2015 11:49 PM

Did anyone call the amberlamps?

Durrann 12-29-2015 11:52 PM

Was sitting on the can, thanks to having the stomach flu or food poisoning. The first thought that came to my mind, is that of all days a potentially hazardous earthquake trembles through is the day I may literally shit myself.

what areas around the lower mainland would be at risk of tsunami? and how far would it reach inland?

Richmond/Delta (White Rock?), and around the Fraser river, all the rivers I imagine

Was working at downtown the whole night. Didn't feel a thing. Only found out when friend msg me. We were hanging some pretty heavy things in the ceiling any movement we would have noticed. Anybody else also in downtown at the time? Wondering if it's the building I was in or downtown just didn't felt it...

Probably a well designed building.......... gentle sway instead of direct transferring of shock waves. Japanese technology, maybe?

Me and friend's conversation on the quake
Friend: "dude, I was fapping and then the whole fucking house shook"
Me: "ok... , I guess you could resume shortly"
Friend: "no, dude, it scared the shit out of my dong and now it doesn't respond to any porn I throw at him"
Me: :lawl:

If the epicentre was indeed in Victoria area, like this one, I doubt there would be a huge tsunami. Just by the way the island(s) and inlets are situated. If it were off the coast a bit further out, then that'd be a different story.

Also, it all depends on what type of shit is underneath us (sand, silt, soil, bedrock, etc.). I would imagine a lot of sinking and breaking apart more than damage from a tsunami. I should have paid more attention in Earth Science classes.

Not my "fault", chick next to me was hot!

SkinnyPupp 12-30-2015 12:53 AM

IIRC it's good that these smaller earthquakes are happening, to relieve the pressure preventing one huge one.

Not sure if that's true, but I recall hearing it somewhere and it makes sense 4Head

MG1 12-30-2015 12:56 AM

Yes, release of pressure on shorter intervals is way better than pent up energy over long periods of time........... sort of like no fap challenge. NVM, bad analogy.

Debatable. Earthquake magnitudes are measured on a logarithmic scale, so you'll need a substantial ( 10^N ) amount of smaller earthquakes to dissipate the energy of a larger ( the big one ) earthquake.

MG1 12-30-2015 12:59 AM

some say small ones are a precursor to a big one, so yes, debatable.

someone in this thread mentioned another earthquake further south of us. We are part of the ring of fire, but we are also in close proximity to a smaller plate.

man, I find this shit to be so interesting. Make me want to go back to school.............. not!

is350 12-30-2015 01:02 AM

I was in a restaurant at the time by myself all quiet, all I heard was the refrigerator, thought someone broke into the restaurant, didn't give much thought

Sentinel 12-30-2015 01:13 AM

Was watching star wars at metro. Felt it shake like 20mins into the movie. Was sitting in ultra avx, thought to myself during the shake: "wtf?! We didn't get dbox... Why are all the seats shaking??"

FerrariEnzo 12-30-2015 01:18 AM

wow.. this thread... prolly the fastest to hit 6 pages in a few hours..

Hehe 12-30-2015 01:19 AM

As ntan already mentioned, energy on quakes is exponential from one level to another.

link

The idea that small quakes releases the likelihood from big one is more of a urban myth than an actual fact.

If anything, this could be a warm-up to a larger quake based on history of major quakes.

jjson 12-30-2015 01:23 AM

I'll just leave this here lol
