This. I was bored one day so I actually read through the fine print of my home insurance. There's actually a ton of loopholes for insurance companies to get out of paying you. Of course, maybe that's just with my insurance provider (BCAA), but I imagine it's relatively similar across the board.

:facepalm::seriously:

Same thing happens to 0/411. Anytime there's any big event, 911/411/0 gets flooded with calls. At least they're not endangering anyone by calling 0/411 too badly, just tying up the circuits.

Also, if you think your cell phone will be ok though it all, expect outages 12-36 hours after the initial event. The cell sites do have battery and/or generators but they won't last forever.

Its stupid to put ones life at risk living in a place where you can be crushed to death... including the average wooden house that can collapse... but that is the life of a rat racer.

We can only hope to live long enough so that our future children dont have the same predicament.

p.s. government earthquake rescue\relief and security will be none existent where many will die of thirst trapped under rubble.
Lastly insurance companies are a monopoly (see Katrina disaster)... as if they would prop up a gazillion dollars after all the damage from a big one. Shit the same guys are fracking up and down B.C. which can in-fact trigger earthquakes... we could be accelerating to a big release of the plates.

you think your downtown 10+ story apartment will save you vs. a wooden structure (assuming you live at said location)? You're more likely to be able to get our of your wooden structure / survive in a strong point vs. if a concrete building goes down / partially crumbles (and we've all seen how slap-dash Van condos are built)

what does the apartment in downtown make you, i'd say that's rat race life more than a wooden house (more conducive to family life)

CharlesInCharge 12-31-2015 05:24 AM

I didnt say anything exempting myself from being a rat racer... nor that my apartment has a better survival rate then a house.

this is so sad, you've given up your crazy anti-rat race stance and have bowed down to 'the man'

weak, CiC, weak. at least stand up for what you believe in!

Why is it crazy to be anti-rat race? And who said I bowed down to the man... Im stating and living a reality of being trapped in the rat race that I was born in... although to a smaller degree then most I'd say.

Good luck with that. My wife works in insurance, the very first email she got the next morning from the higher-ups basically said NOBODY WRITE ANY EARTHQUAKE COVERAGE.

CiC lives in a cardboard box in the middle of a field in Aldergrove.

You know that "no name local company" is just an insurance underwriter like RBC right? Underwriters are just middlemen (salesmen). When shit hits the fan and you need a payout, the actual insurance company that pays you out is the same company that has the SAME COVERAGE (offered at RBC insurance and that "no name local guy"), but likely for a higher premium at RBC cause it has a name. Lol

A good strategy I hadn't really heard of for families who live all over the Lower mainland is to have a common person out of province you call to confirm you're safe etc.

This way at the very least if you are able to call out, you won't have to try and deal with busy signals on both ends

I finally convinced myself to create an emergency preparedness kit... at the local dollar store (excludes my family first aid kit)

Forget the lighters. Replace them with waterproof matches or a proper flint.

quasi 01-01-2016 06:52 AM

I actually agree with CIC for once.......oh wow thought I'd never say anything so gross. Look up Katrina and insurance claims, so many insurance companies weaseled out of paying in full with bullshit fine print. Oh yes sir we cover the wind damage but not flooding, the hurricane winds ripped your roof off we'll pay to fix that but all the water damage in your house after the roof came off that's due to flooding which we don't cover.

Insurance companies will pay some stuff but guaranteed people will still get screwed left right and center where ever possible.

StylinRed 01-01-2016 08:10 AM

I remember insurance companies here raised their rates due to Katrina payouts :seriously:

As for Insurance companies weaseling out of paying, that's an obvious outcome, it's what they always do. With regard to Katrina, just look at State Farm, they were found guilty of fraud from their attempts to not payout claims

It's not just with natural disasters. It happens very frequently with major surgeries that needs to be done in the US that's supposedly covered by your private health insurance, then they deny it cause it's too costly. Pretty sickening stuff.

I would recommend you return the disposable respirators you bought and buy a box of them that have an N95 rating and are made by either Honeywell, 3M, or Moldex. They're not much more expensive and you don't want to have to learn the ones you bought are entirely ineffective in an emergency. You can buy a box of one of the brands I recommended for $15-20 on Amazon.

StylinRed 01-01-2016 12:13 PM

his are cdc approved N95's, made by DaSheng though

i-vtecyo 01-01-2016 12:57 PM

Yea thanks for the tips, Im planning to make some adjustments with my kit tomorrow. I ordered a few extra items on amazon last night such as emergency blankets, hand warmers and a portable radio.

PiuYi 01-01-2016 01:16 PM

curious to know what was the total cost of this kit?

Lomac 01-01-2016 01:16 PM

Here's what's in my emergency bag:

First Aid Kit
Flares
Reflective vest
Waterproof matches (debating picking up a flint, however)
Candles
Cedar flakes for a quick fire starter
Waterproof poncho
Spare change of clothes
Extra warm duvet and wool blanket
RF Radios w/charger (and power inverter)
CB radio that can be easily hooked up to the car
Knife (currently a retractable piece, though I want to pick up a proper one at some point)
Gorilla & electrical tape
N95 mask w/replacement filters
Gloves (both latex and cloth)
LED flashlight and spare batteries
Water and food (couple of MRE packs, granola bars, cans of whatnots)
Water purification kit
Retractable snow shovel
Random odds and ends (ie: wiring and connectors, twine, small tarp, etc)
Also tend to carry a set of roadside tools in my trunk as well. Previous experiences have taught me that it's a good idea... :lol

As I mentioned earlier, it's designed more for highway winter survival than a full blown emergency, but it's better than nothing.

You are planning to open those awful plastic wrapping first right? :badpokerface:

My now simplified emergency kit:
4x500ml bottle water+12 granola/chocolate bar
Water purifier
Emergency Blanket
Certified copies of IDs for the family
Leatherman Wave
Permanent match
~$300 of cash
Mini first aid kit with alcohol, and some pads/tapes

I've tried them myself. CDC approved or not, they're not as effective as the brands I recommended for brief use, and they're totally ineffective for extended use. It's worth it to buy one of the brands I recommended.

This is my small kit that I always keep in the car. Some of the stuff isn't shown as its in the side pouches of the bag and I forgot take them out for the pic lol. Its more of a light camping kit but i'll probably have better odds surviving with this stuff than those prepared "survival" kits.

* Small medical kit with bandages of various size, medical tape and alcohol prep pads
* Flashlight with batteries
* Fire striker & fire starter sticks
* Emergency blanket
* Large garbage bags that can function as a sleeping bag or poncho
* Hatchet & knife
* Canteen Cup Stove with a mini alcohol stove but also can be heated with a fire under it. Can boil water & cook with it.
* Oatmeal & Chicken noodle packs
* Nitrile gloves
* Micra leatherman multi-tool
* Change of clothes
* Re-usable hand warmer. Reactivates by boiling it in water.
* One man tent
* Camping spoon fork
* Foldable hand saw
* Roasting attachment for hot dogs, etc that attaches to a stick.
