Fido customers w/ grandfathered 6gig ($30) plans - No data alerts before going over

Well, I can't blame anyone but myself for going over my data... I think it comes down to the fact that I stream a lot of podcasts on my iphone when I should be downloading the episodes off wifi.

In the last 6 months, I've gone over my 6gig limit twice, and the only time I know is when fido sends me a text message telling me that they cut my data because I went over my usage by $50.00.

I used to get warning messages, I think at 90% of usage... But I haven't gotten those in years and didn't really notice until I started to go over my limit.

Contacted Fido, and they said that because of my grandfathered plan, my data package does not include warning messages prior to going over my usage, and the only way to get that back is to get on a new data plan (which costs more and you get less data).

The also do not provide a service where they cut you off at your 6gig limit.

Besides downloading the fido app and manually monitoring my own usage, any other ideas out there?

Thanks in advance :)

what phone you using? theres a option on the samsung phones that you can set data limit/warning in case you do go over. I used to do that + get the text but im guessing they stopped sending em according to your post.

using the fido app/website to monitor is prob ur best bet doe

swiftshift 03-16-2016 08:33 AM

I have the same plan
$30 for 6GB ADD-ON
I go over sometimes because I get over confident since I only browse the web.
Best way to check is just to check your usage more frequently or call #611 - dial 2.
Representatives don't usually have a long que time

OR

You can call Fido and tell them to turn off/block your data after the 6GB is met.

I'm using an iPhone... I would prefer my phone/or Fido to text me before I go over the limit, or when I reach the limit.

Does me no use to get a text message from Fido AFTER i go over by 1.5gig and get charged $50.00 lol!!

It's tough to remember to log into the fido app manually to see where I'm at with my data. #firstworldproblems #superlazy

This. Plus you have pretty much the best plan ever offered so you ain't getting any sympathy from me haha

604CEFIRO 03-16-2016 08:44 AM

Haha, I know I deserve no sympathy.

I guess waking up to a text message at 2am telling me that I spent $50.00 because I went over my data by 1.5 gig has me on FULL TILT right now LOL....

swiftshift, is this true?

I was told that cut off at 6gig isn't a service that's available...

As Vansterdam posted, does your phone have a data monitor that allows you to set a limit warning? All the androids I've used in the last 5 years have this feature, not sure about iphones though.

I don't see why not, we are paying customers and asking them to put a restriction after our data limits are exceeded isn't that much.
If they won't do this service it will negatively represent the company as it seems they just want to " make " money off your over-usage.
They should take the due-diligence to cater your needs.

I am shocked that iPhone does not have a built-in data monitor where it warns the user when you're near capacity.

It does. You just have to manually reset it every month.

604CEFIRO 03-16-2016 10:28 AM

I don't believe it will warn you when you approach your limit though...

It just tells you how much you've used.

Downloading "My Data Manager" right now to see if it's useful

Whoops, misread it as a data manager that tracks your usage

Confirmation from fido that they don't restrict data when you receive your data package limit

GabAlmighty 03-16-2016 11:01 AM

Really Jonathan? You UNDERSTAND how I feel towards this?!?!

dat_steve 03-16-2016 11:46 AM

Jonathan is full of shit. I bet he's sitting at his desk smiling with a coffee in one hand and the other in 604CEFIRO's back pocket.

604CEFIRO 03-16-2016 11:55 AM

Jonathan went for the reach around... I was impressed

call into retentions and complain

im on an old 6gb and not supposed to get them either but i still do

Razor Ramon HG 03-16-2016 03:18 PM

The other option is Koodo's $48 plan if you can live with one less gigabyte. I know Telus allows you to set alerts for like specific data usage percentages so I'd imagine Koodo is the same.

Rogers/fido does not set alerts on purpose to FUCK YOU!
I went over a lot of times and raged.

No warning and I called before to add the warning. They refunded me the overage because the previous operator was wrong. Grandfathered plans dont receive the warning for some stupid reason

TOS'd 03-16-2016 06:16 PM

I'm on Rogers with the same $30 6GB data plan grandfathered and I still get text messages from some 8-digit number saying I've reached 80%, last one I got was mid January.

How do you guys go over so much data? I have a 2GB plan and hardly reach 500MB on a month.

underscore 03-17-2016 07:23 AM

^ I only have 200MB and I usually don't go over 100MB :lol

I have a widget right on my main screen that tells me how much data and how much wifi I've used, so I see where I'm at every time I use my phone. No getting cut off by surprise!
