Trudeau government considering a tax on Netflix and other streaming services

This article makes my blood boil! Trudeau is considering a tax on Netflix and other streaming services.

As Canadians, we pay some of the highest amounts of tax in the world when you look at income tax, sales tax, property tax, etc.

Now this idiot wants to tax my Netflix!!!

What's next for taxation? Online porn???

Ottawa is considering taxing Netflix, other streaming services: reports - NEWS 1130

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – Consumer rights groups aren’t happy after hearing news that the Trudeau government may be considering the possibility of a so-called ‘Netflix tax.’

Right now, Canadian streaming services are forced to charge sales taxes to their customers, but that isn’t the case for more popular internationally based sites such as Netflix or Amazon Prime.

There are reports that briefing notes for the federal heritage minister show the government is considering the option forcing these groups to tax Canadian customers, which is upsetting to Bruce Cran with the Consumers’ Association of Canada. “Any new tax is a problem for everybody. This just seems like another burden that they want to put on the backs of consumers. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous they are even considering something like this.”

He adds it’s a slippery slope when government begins trying to tax every service on the Internet. “That could open more doors in the future where similar things could be treated in the same manner.”

The federal finance minister’s office doesn’t deny this is an option on the table, stressing the department regularly assesses the tax system to make sure it’s fair and fiscally responsible

They already taxed Canadian companies' similar services. They're going after international companies' services.

Netflix is like 10 bucks a month. Prime is even less. Trivia amount.

One point in the article mentions the slippery slope of a tax on streaming services. What if other Internet services are taxed in the future?

He adds it’s a slippery slope when government begins trying to tax every service on the Internet. “That could open more doors in the future where similar things could be treated in the same manner

An example could be an additional online sales tax on top of the PST/GST that we pay when we buy stuff from retailers. This kind of tax could apply to every e-commerce purchase that you make.

All of a sudden that 4K TV which you bought online does not become a bargain anymore if there's an online sales tax.

This tax, if introduced, opens up the possibility of taxes on other Internet services. That is what makes me angry.

The Canadian services are already paying the same taxes, since Netflix has a specific Canadian division why they shouldn't pay the same taxes? I could see the complaint if Netflix was the same worldwide but it isn't.

If this happens Netflix will go down the path of Shomi for Canadians.

Netflix available everywhere except Canada. We are gonna be the Quebec of the world.

How would a tax shut down netflix in Canada. It costs them next to nothing to run it in Canada.

Imagine having to pay a tax on goods and services! What will we do?!
While you are shitting your pants about a dollar a month to binge watch shitty tv shows, I'll be happy there is like 30-40 million dollars to spend on something like healthcare, or education.

I mean sure let's start with Netflix. What aobut Apple TV, Google play store, Spofty?
Do we have to start paying tax then when we rent a movie or buy a movie from these services?
What about streaming music? I mean do we have to pay tax for it as well?
What about youtube. Or Twitch when we sub we sometimes have to pay a monthly so do we have to pay tax for that as well?
What about when we start paying for in game service such as buying diamaond for candy crush? Or paying for a deck of cards in Heartstone? How about monthly Sub for online gaming services?

So now if we add up add these service it isn't just 50 cents a month now is it.

this so called tax is called GST/HST.... which miraculously was already in Canada before Netflix

i think you'll have broader issues than just netflix if that tax is going up and up and up

This is on point.

The CRTC owns our government, almost to the extent that big banks and corporations own the American government.

Bell media (CraveTV) is upset that it may be losing ground to Netflix, so it sends lobbyists to insert thoughts into the heads of our decision makers... and viola, we get a shit tax passed.

Remember when verizon wireless tried coming into Canada about 3 years ago? No? Exactly - it never happened, and we hardly heard about it. The media organizations in Canada are trying to protect themselves and continue on with their monopoly (Bell, Rogers, Telus), charging us ridiculous prices for their mediocre services. This is why we pay the HIGHEST amount of money for our phone bills in the world.

It is ridiculous that this tax is even being considered. It'll only detract consumers from using netflix when things get tight, or from using youtube, vimeo or whatever other streaming service might be available that could get taxed in the future.

Quebec for all it is, has kept its identity............... just saiyan.

I'm not sure what to think of this. As long as the tax collected is going to something worthwhile, I'm okay with it. Also, I don't have Netflix, so it doesn't bother me. Now if they started taxing casino winnings, then all hell's gonna break loose, hee hee, hue hue, pew pew.

Right now, Canada is in an awkward position between some socialist values stuck in a horribly broken American style capitalism.

I'd rather they shit or get off the pot so to speak. We pay high taxes, and don't get a ton for them because people are so resistant to the next steps. I'd rather pay higher taxes and step into things like basic incomes for poor people and better education like the elite countries have. People are happier, and everyone is well off instead of this massive inequality.
Netflix tax isn't going to solve our problems, but people demand more social programs and want to pay less taxes. Well, that just isn't fucking reality. The money has to come from somewhere.

Just legalize weed already and fuck off with the nickel and diming that never ends. People want a cash cow, that's what we need, not an extra 50 cents from Netflix subscriptions.
