Loblaws (Superstore) sells all gas stations to Mobil

Loblaw sells chain of 213 gas stations to Brookfield for $540M - Business - CBC News

Quote:
Loblaw is selling its network of 213 gas stations and attached convenience stores to a unit of TSX-listed Brookfield Business Partners for $540 milion.

The grocery chain announced the news in a release Wednesday morning. Brookfield plans to convert all of the stations to the brand name Mobil, which is well known in the U.S. and elsewhere but not in Canada thus far.

All of the stations are located next to Loblaw-owned retail grocery stores and they will continue to offer the company's loyalty program, PC Points.

The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of this year.

It's the second major move in the gas station industry to be announced in recent days, as Parkland Fuels announced earlier this week that it would be buying Chevron's line of Canadian stations for almost $1.5 billion.

And last year, Imperial Oil sold its remaining 497 Esso retail stations in Canada to five buyers for a total of $2.8 billion. Parkland was also one of the purchasers in that deal.

Last year, Parkland made a similar deal to purchase the Ultramar brand of gas stations.

While the Loblaws deal with the owner of the Mobil brand in Canada wasn't an oil company getting out of the gas business, it's part of a broader consolidation trend in the industry says Roger McKnight, chief petroleum analyst with En-Pro International in Oshawa, Ont.

"It's just going to keep on going," he said in an interview with CBC News. "The oil companies feel like the downstream side is pretty much inconsistent to a lot of political ... situations they don't like to be in."
Could mean no more cheap gas at superstore.

Update to this, since the Mobil-Superstore stations are mostly in full effect now. They no longer sell 91 as no ethanol (at least at the Richmond location). Also the pc points card only gives you 3.5cents/L, unless you have their mc, which is 7cents/L

I've been running Mobil/Superstore gas fine for the past couple of months. But since I go so consistently, I don't remember what chevron is like LOL. I know my car runs like shit on Canadian shell and esso tho.

Gas is going up tmr by 2 cents tmr (151.9), so since you're asking about the states, just go to a Chevron/Texaco. There's plenty of Texaco's around, but I think there's more Mobil. From what I hear, Mobil is a pretty popular gas station in Hong Kong.

Try it and let us know!

Yeah I did some further research: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Oil

Turns out the largest, and controlling, shareholder of Imperial Oil (Esso) is ExxonMobil, which is a joint venture between Exxon and Mobil.

So effectively Superstore gas is Mobil gas, and Esso gas is also Mobil gas. Weird. I wonder where Superstore gas came from before the deal.

I am pretty sure it was Esso but all gas comes from the same refinery.

don't forget the exchange rate, gas spent to and from, and gas burned in border lineups (if you don't have nexus).

The only way to compromise for the trip is to buy groceries.

I really like Canadian Shell gas. No corn juice in the 91. Not sure about USA shell as my car's seem to hate it. Maybe it's just pure marketing but my car's also hate chevron 91 and I'm too cheap to buy chevron 94

Went to the states for gas and waited an hour and half to get back to Canada. 1.26 for 92, but I don't think I can justify the trips over unless I get Nexus.

Carbon Tax goes up to $35/tCO2eq on April 1. Approximately 1.2 cents/litre increase.
