Those stores are a mistake. Where as Uniqlo and Muji is actually focusing on the entire NA market and not.. a tiny geographical location

Last I heard, Uniqlo was struggling in the US. So clearly they know the NA market.

How about pretty much every other dollar store business in general? You make it sound like they're the only successful one around.

It's a fucking race to the bottom in this city now. Luxury stores popping up left and right on Alberni street. Mid-range stores closing left and right on Robson street. The middle class will soon have to fight over scraps in dollar stores and daiso/miniso/so-so/so-what?

Dollar stores drive foot traffic similar to pretty much every dollar store in the city. My point was, why are you even surprised that Daiso worked; in Aberdeen or not. People don't care about the branding for a dollar store. You could open up a Dollorama or RS Cheap Shit for a Buck store and it would likely yield similar results.

The branding and selection is one of the keys to Daiso's success. You constantly see people making trips from all over to visit Daiso, but I doubt you see the same for Dollorama.

End of the day, cheap shit is cheap shit. While the "Made in Japan" sticker may influence the average Asian consumer minds. I won't even be surprised if their items are made in China then repackaged with Japan before they make it onto shelves.

And whoever makes Daiso as their reason for visiting Aberdeen/Richmond must be an idiot. I live in Burnaby. I can tell you that the thought of driving 30+ minutes to buy a $2 widget in Daiso has never even crossed my mind. Fuck me, I might have to pay a few dollars more in Metrotown? And it's not made in Japan? I'll be this idiot instead, my time is worth more than that.

Well, the previous poster alluded to the fact that Uniqlo has a master plan which makes them the exception. I'm simply letting him know that his perception is not reality.

I look for stuff made in Japan and to my surprise there are some things at Daiso that are. Plastic containers, stationery items, stainless steel containers, dinnerware, etc. Not a whole lot, but quite surprising.

Dollars store's is a billion dollar industry. There are plenty of regular dollar stores around. So when a "new unique/different style" comes out to play. I can definitely see it being a hit

Imo. Its like having canadian/kokanee brands all your life but someone brings out a sapparo

Exactly. I bought joggers in Asia uniqlo, ppl ask me where I got them and the only comparable products here is from Nike. Which is literally quadruple the price
