What's different is the effects on a single community are far greater. The population of the entire town of Humboldt is less than 6000 people, for a town that I'm sure everyone knows everyone.

Too bad, this is so fucking out of line. I hope she feels the heat from McLeans.

for fucks sake, the "whiteness"? seriously?

I really don't see the problem with the comment to be honest. Tasteless, sure, but is she really wrong though? Do these kid's abject "whiteness" certainly not play a role in the media coverage, how could it not? We see this in the media on all levels, how can that be denied?

Was the media talking about the countless Native kids who are killing themselves on reserves? What about the years of women disappearing off the streets where we heard little of a peep from the media?

Not trying to start a race debate here whatsoever, but I don't think her views are that esoteric on this topic.

I will note, this was a tragedy, albeit I don't know these people whatsoever, nor am I wearing a hockey jersey today.

underscore 04-12-2018 02:39 PM

I think them being athletes has more to do with it than them being white, I'm guessing most people probably hadn't even seen the pictures of them early on. If a bus full of kids going to a math competition crashed I don't think people would be putting calculators on their porches.

That said, did she even confirm that they're "white" or just assume that they are because they play hockey? Plenty of people have ancestry you wouldn't guess by looking at them or their last name.

Sure, but I doubt most of the things people are doing have any real affect on that.

You may not be trying to start a race war, but the person who wrote that article sure was. What a disgusting piece of shit. It makes me so upset when a tragedy happens and right away the talking heads with zero sympathy find a way to turn it into a political talking point. This garbage is just as bad as the NRA talking about "good guys with guns" right after a bunch of kids get killed in a school shooting.

There's a time and a place to spout off nonsense using trigger (no pun intended) words like "whiteness" and "maleness". Using those words in a context that trivializes the grief of all of the families involved just to get more page views for someone's shitty SJW page? Pathetic.

RIP to the victims, and prayers for all the families involved.

If it's a bit much for you or anyone else, then don't do it. If someone wants to do it, go for it.

Everyone is getting so caught up with everyone else's business these days, it's worrisome. If people are not doing anything morally wrong, then let it be.

Do you think if it were a bus of <insert non-white race> girls, the media/country wouldn't give a shit?

Yes

It was an integral part of Justin Trudeau's platform in 2015. It had been discussed in the media for years prior to that.

You're talking about many smaller tragedies happening over a long period which eventually became a big story (or, apparently, not a story at all from your account). It's completely different from most people's perspectives.

Again, this is the sudden loss of a substantial number of mostly young people. Any time there's a sudden substantial loss of PEOPLE from a first world country, there's generally a significant response from both the media and the general public. Our society values the lives of children higher than the lives of adults.

Mosque shooting in Quebec, black church shooting in the US, etc. The outpouring of support wasn't as significant because ... they weren't children. But it was still there. It was still headline news nationally and internationally.

Playing identity politics, which is a divisive and hypocritical practice at the best of times, with dead children during a time of nationwide grieving; she's getting what she deserves.

I hope she never works in journalism again. The only reason she still has a job is because she's a Unifor executive abusing her union's power (and PR department) to keep herself in.

These tweets came out shortly after her comments (and, going back a month in their tweets, I couldn't find any others like this):

Saskatchewan RCMP will be providing an update Thursday into their ongoing investigation into the Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

Sixteen people, including players, coaching staff, a play-by-play broadcast, a statistician and an athletic therapist, died as a results of injuries suffered on April 6 when the Bronco’s team bus was involved in a crash with a semi-truck at a highway intersection in eastern Saskatchewan.

A statement from the RCMP said Asst. Commissioner Curtis Zablocki will not be announcing any charges related to the collision; instead he will be updating the status of the investigation.

Police are also making available a forensic collision reconstructionist not investigating the crash to answer general questions about collision investigations.

fliptuner 07-06-2018 11:10 AM

Driver of the semi, just arrested. 29yo Jas Sidhu. 16 counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and 13 counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily injury.

bcedhk 07-06-2018 12:22 PM

probably will just get a driving ticket and driving ban for a year.

MG1 07-06-2018 12:28 PM

Recovery from such tragedy is hard, but I’d imagine this helps a bit. Just knowing how it went down. The accused’s life will never be the same, but damn. Tragic no matter how you look at it.

i think not... but whatever justice comes out of it, it will never be enough for the community

Mr.Money 07-06-2018 12:39 PM

Sidhu worked for the trucking company for a month prior to the fatal collision, according to owner Sukhmander Singh. Singh said Sidhu trained with him for two weeks and was driving on his own for two more weeks before the crash

Rookie driver with out of Canada license.
