Our film industry was already struggling here the last few years, so most definitely this will be a big deal if it moves forward.

Post Covid boom was good, but the strikes with SAG and the WGA really did a number on us, production levels haven't been the same since.

How is he going to enforce a 100% tariff on films. Films are shot in multiple locations and work is done all over the place. If a VFX house in Canada does some work how is that going to be tariffed on a film shot in the US. What about foreign films? How about anime? If an American uses a streaming service to watch some anime from Japan is the person going to have to pay a tariff? This guy is an idiot.

The idiot can't keep his mouth shut, and just dumps whatever 1/4-baked idea out from his brain onto Truth Social. Stock value of various film industry firms immediately dropped a few percentage points, and I seem to think there is already talk from his administration on walking back on that tariff.

If he really wants to follow through with it, I'm sure he can write up yet another Congress-bypassing executive order to demand producers to specify the amount of "foreign content" in each film, and tax the film accordingly. So the lead actor isn't American? X% of the film is no longer American and subjected to tariffs! Y mins of the film was filmed in Italy? Another Z% of the film is no longer American.

The rule set would then be so complicated that nobody understands it, and they'll announce a 90-day pause on the foreign content film tariff.

Gosh I wish I am just making all of this BS up. Unfortunately, I think even my BS here has more logic and is better thought out than his original idea.

https://www.cnn.com/2025/05/06/busin...hortages-ports

Expect shortages of goods across all American retail stores very soon.

American consumers are on the cusp of tough choices because of President Donald Trump’s trade war.

Ships now pulling into US harbors from China are the first to be subject to the massive tariffs that America is imposing on most Chinese imports. Many of them are half full.

That means, in a matter of weeks, consumers will face higher prices and shortages of certain items.

Imports from China have fallen dramatically since Trump imposed steep tariffs – particularly since last month, when the tit-for-tat trade war sent the tariff on most Chinese goods up to 145%.

“This week, we’re down about 35% compared to the same time last year, and these cargo ships coming in are the first ones to be attached to the tariffs that were levied against China and other locations last month,” Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, told CNN Tuesday. “That’s why the cargo volume is so light.”

The drop-off in imports from China on the boats now coming into port is more than 50%, Seroka said. Many importers have canceled previous orders because US businesses aren’t interested in paying the steep tariff, which can more than double the price of Chinese goods.

The Port of LA had expected 80 ships to arrive in May, but 20% of those have been canceled, Seroka said. Customers have already canceled 13 sailings for June.

^ May 18... price increase... we'll see what happens.

Walmart, AMZ are starting to see supply going down.
Prime day in July / Aug... well guess what.. can't make it work as there's nothing to come in or to supply to them.

You can argue the volume is down because businesses have been frontloading to ensure sustainable inventory levels. Month to month matters far more than year-over-year. I don't think there is strong evidence that consumption is contracting.

I remember as a kid all of the coolest stuff you could get was found at GARAGE SALES and 2nd hand stuff was cheap and awesome.

I haven't looked on Facebook or anywhere, maybe tons of garage sales still happen in Vancouver?

The natural quesiton to ask is -- how will this affect us?

The ones close to the Canadian border will start coming over the border to buy things that they can no longer get because they just aren't imported anymore. The volume will depend on how strict the CBP is with pulling ppl in to get taxed.

I believe there would be a critical mass number which the CBP just can't handle at the land crossing and start waving the lower values through.

It's happened long enough that Canadians go to the states to buy things, it's gonna reverse now, especially since the Canadian dollar is so weak.

Canada won't be taxing them (they do that at the point of payment), America will be doing it on their way back to the country. They are going to be a lot more strict in checking for people smuggling goods

That's why I said CBP and not CBSA. They'll get pulled in when returning. I don't think the CBP is prepared to deal with the volume.

I was really thinking more along the lines of how a shortage of goods will affect us in the sense of whether we'll see any shortages as well. For the most part, our market is ~1/10th the size of what the US market is, so sometimes our market just gets treated as an afterthought for foreign producers -- if they were sending stuff along to the US, they might as well divert a portion of it to Canada once they have arrived in the US. Obviously, with the US tariffs, it wouldn't be profitable to ship anything to the US anymore. So in that regard, would we get cut off from those goods as well? Are there a lot of products like that?

If the US is seeing shortages while we don't, then certainly what EvoFire mentioned will happen. I just don't know shipping logistics well enough to know how we'll be affected by a shortage of goods in the US.

It is also worth bearing in mind that lately, the USD has lost some value as well, so we're back in the 72¢ to the dollar range again.

We are one tenth the market, but 40 million people will still command a substantial amount of goods from Asia which mostly funnels through Vancouver. We are one of the busier ports in North America for good reason.
