so much gatekeeping here

Waiting on porn fapping to be an e-sport.

JqC 08-03-2018 12:22 PM

I've always thought 'competition' is a better word to use than 'sport'.

radioman 08-03-2018 12:30 PM

I mean they literally call it "e-sports" not "sports" yet people are still complaining about it.

JqC 08-03-2018 12:33 PM

The best that E-sports has to offer. Talked about in the same breath as Crosby or Lebron. Yep, sounds about right.

DragonChi 08-03-2018 12:54 PM

Not going to lie, watching that made me want to quit gaming forever.

Call it whatever you want. But it's a industry that isn't going to die anytime soon.

twitchyzero 08-03-2018 01:42 PM

so a pro who's playing unreal tournament/counter-strike since childhood/teenage years migrate to a newer version of the game that came out few years ago, his career is suddenly only few years old?

I think some of you here are too stuck on the label that anyone who games professionally must hole up in a lan café eating only instant ramen and showers weekly...does it mean you have to dominate a triathalon to be called an athelete...no but many of them lead healthy life

Imo it’s not even close to a sport.

Also mentioning the conditioning team work etc. these people are playing games that are less than 3 years old. So your entire “career” is 3 years old or less. It took you that long to get to that point.

Not to mention most of the “e athletes” look like they couldn’t even carry their own computer into the venue if they had to. Dem basement dwelling athletes

if we used your logic we can disregard anyone who trains on a wheelchair, bobsled, rowboat?

I guess drivers like Colin McRae and Fangio are also not worthy of your discussion :fulloffuck:

Please tell me that this isn't representative of the best esport gamers ... lmao.

underscore 08-03-2018 02:22 PM

If you look at pro sports at a basic level I don't see how this is any different. It's adults getting paid to do the same recreational activity loads of other adults and kids do, just at a slightly higher skill level. They need certain skills and usually dedicate far more time than any sane person would to what is still only a game.

Actual “professional athletes” have spent their entire lives hoaning their craft whether that’s a tiger woods or Sidney Crosby etc or even some shitty CFL player. Their entire lives whether they are playing or not, off season or not, is dedicated to their sport.

:suspicious: Look up Danny Watkins, he went from playing football as a hobby to being drafted in 3 years. For some events like the skeleton people go from having never tried it to competing at the olympics within a few years. Sure the game they're playing may be new to them, but they're using skills they started developing long before.

I'd argue that on average athletes contribute nothing but basic entertainment, and are massively overpaid for what they actually do.

Hondaracer 08-03-2018 02:37 PM

i cant stand that argument that athletes are overpaid..

Sidney Crosby makes what, 10 million a year? He's 1 of 1 in the world.

10 million is too much for the most talented, gifted person at their profession? no way.

People are only paid that much only because what people are willing to pay to watch them. If a bunch of people want to pay an e-sports "athlete" then he should receive a salary commiserate to what he brings in through ticket revenue.

You also have the sale of broadcasting rights, sponsorships, and merch.

CorneringArtist 08-03-2018 04:25 PM

There is one case where a e-sports gamer ended his career because his pro soccer career took off.

Lots of other people are 1 of 1, best in the world at their career or hobby but it doesn't make them any money. 10 million to be a bit better than other people at playing a kids game where you hit a hunk of rubber with a stick, and outside of entertainment value his profession provides absolutely zero value to society. When you look at it like that he's pretty overpaid.
