Even if the other driver backed off (after an altercation, a yelling match, or a waiting game) and gave you the spot, would you actually feel safe leaving your car there?
When I have to go to Aberdeen, I rather park in the front or side street and put a dollar in to the meter than to go inside the parkade.
Which is what I do as well if I'm forced to go to Aberdeen, a couple of the parking lots on Alexandra Road are brutal as well. This along with just the shit show that is Richmond driving is the reason that I have rules around when I go to Richmond.

Maybe you're just not trying hard enough, OP
I wouldn't care less because I avoid going to crowded places. Even living across Metrotown I rather walk 5mins to go T&T and superstore than to drive 10+ mins and then spend time looking for a parking. I also avoid going to shopping center after noon on weekends to avoid the crowd. If I see a line up at a restaurant I get out and go find another one with no line ups (other than that cheesecake place in metro have to line up starting at 9:30 even then I waited an hour and a half.).
As Vancouver population grow these situation is bound to happen and is not something we can all avoid. But I guess most people would think about damaging the other person but would they actually do it?

You can avoid an altercation by handling it like a grown adult.
Saw that happen one time. Dude stole parking spot from a guy driving a lifted dually. Well he later found his car half way down the parking lot. Moral of the story> Don't piss off a guy driving a lifted dually.
I actually had a guy at Costco a few months ago recognize that someone was going to steal the spot he was leaving that I was waiting for. He pulled back in and reversed out the other direction to block the bastard. Faith in humanity temporarily restored.
I haven’t had the opportunity to do this for anyone myself yet but I’m planning on doing it moving forward.

I never park near the door I park at the back of the lot and would never fight over a parking spot.

That's exactly what I do. Suss out the surroundings before I leave. Oh there's a douchebag? Ok, fuck you. Hahaha.
Honestly, I try not to sweat the small shit. My energy is better spent elsewhere. Plus, you can have the measly spot and I'll park somewhere else. It might take me a bit longer....long enough for you to leave your car unattended.

At my first job, our manager, the proud new owner of an MG Midget, decided to show off and park right up front between two wooden planters. When everyone got off work, we lifted up his car and put it in the stall parallel. It was like the hallway cart scene in Austin Powers. I didn't stick around to find out how he got it out of there. Geo Metros seemed to be prime targets for similar pranks in HS.
problem with this is even if you win and get the spot, i'd be worried about my own car. I know someone who got their car vandalized because of a parking spot.
