Climate change is going to make a lot of places in world challenging to live in, unless you're in the elite.

Canada is still one of the better positioned countries due to our fresh water supply and our still sparsely populated land mass.

I've totally lost the point of Honda's continued stance here, I feel like this thread has turned into a broken record on a loop.

Honda you and your family have been able to establish a standard of living that you would never have had if you weren't born in this country, you should show some appreciation for that, as opposed to whining all the time about this country. I have family in Nigeria that would dream to have been born here, one shouldn't lose sight of the privilege we carry. If all you do is complain and not provide nor want to contribute to a solution, you're part of the problem.

There are numerous cities in the US that have areas as bad as the DTES. Sure, the DTES is a tragedy, and has been for decades now, but that's a very small segment of downtown Vancouver. London most certainly has some terrible areas in comparison, as does Paris. Whenever we see cities with major affordability problems, we see the drug issue soon follow.

There are so many ongoing factors contributing to this cultural malaise in the Western world, and clearly none of these governments have an easy answer or quick fix on how to tackle them.

Honda: Canada sucks, it's a shithole country that's going down the drain. Everywhere else I go things are better. Trudeau did this to us. You guys are delusional to think we're doing fine.
The rest of us: Why don't you leave?
Honda: Nah, my life would be worse if I left.

If I had been born in the countries my ancestors were from my quality of life would be equal or greater? lol

Yea no shit if I was born in the Congo it would be a rough go, anyone could say the same.

People are just accustomed to the general degradation of society. Canada should be celebrated because we have clean water? Or because the perception of “safety”

My point is and always will be, we should be doing so much better than we are. We can all celebrate living in 2 million dollar homes all the while strung out crack heads are bent over in our alleys? Nah.

For most people outside of this forum, the Canadian/North American dream in over. I work with some people who are 10 years younger than I am, they make between $90,000 and $150,000 and they are all essentially hopeless. No hope of buying housing, no hope of even saving money.

Well Honda, maybe look inward then.

Many of the problems we're seeing in Vancouver stem from greed. Many in this province were happy to vote in shitty policy and agenda items for short-term gain which created many of these problems in the first place. Many were happy to turn a blind eye as long as their property values continued to go up in perpetuity.

So, here we are.

Yea.. for the most part those things weren’t caused by the majority of us.

I certainly know people who are 100% part of the problem but I was never out there speculating on real estate or doing illegitimate shit to get ahead here.

Assuming these 10 years younger people are in their early to mid 30's range, if they are making $90 - $150k/yr, how would they be "essentially hopeless" at all?

No hope of buying housing? No hope of saving money? I'm gonna put on my grumpy old man's hat and rant.

I agree that they have no hope of buying a detached home the Metro Vancouver core -- basically CoV, Burnaby, Richmond. Market prices are just outrageous compared to people's salaries. This isn't the 70's where a single income can support the entire household living in a new-ish bungalow or Vancouver Special.

But what about houses a bit further out? or townhouse / apartments still close to CoV / BBY, RMD? I am checking Realtor.ca just now, and there are still lots of houses in Tsawwassen / Coquitlam / PoCo in the $1.4 - $1.6M range. With 2 salaries in that $90 - $150k range, these are definitely within reach.

If someone in his early 30's is trying to save up a down payment, you do what is necessary to cut your costs down to a bare minimum. Live with your parents. Don't eat out nearly as often. Drive a shxtty (but reliable) car. Cut back on the expensive hobbies. Is doing any of that beneath someone earning $90 - $150k? I honestly don't know. But back in my late 20's, early 30's, I did a lot of that while earning a salary that is far lower than your quoted $90 - $150k range.

The girl at the gym is thinking about moving back to comox. Shes from there originally and she showed me some listings, wow! less than a mill, 700-800k get you something that costs in vancouver 2 mill+

for your average canadian, i think thats a really sensible choice if you find vancouver too expensive. i mean what are you really missing by moving away? food and shopping, but thats about it. Job wise, if you can work remotely, why would you stay here.... makes no sense.

Many people in their late 20’s early 30’s have zero savings, regardless of how good they are with money due to low wages and schooling etc.

So say you make 100k a year, a 1 bed basement suite is $24,000+ a year

You’re now spending a quarter of your pre-tax income on housing alone.

That isn’t hopeless?

No offense but “back in your early 20’s” when was that? The early 2000’s? lol

Like Badhobz said, if you're in your 20's and 30's pulling in that salary range, it means the general demographic/background of this person is something like: University educated (maybe even a Master's), professional, engineer, nurse, teacher, new lawyer or new doctor (in the 130-150K range), prob with good parental support = loan for down payment. You don't need to worry about this fellow/gal, he/she will be just fine.

Get a condo or TH to start the home ownership journey. I mean to say that a 20-30 can't afford a detached home with that salary and that's a shame is a bit of an entitlement perspective. You're living in the 80's.

A 500k mortgage is what, $3500 a month?

For a basic 1 br in a suburb?

I think you’re kind of underestimating the strain of housing costs. And that also assumes you have a 100,000+ down payment

earning 100k+ dual income isnt common though, it's like 95th percentile or something and you still have to make compromises like living in the burbs.
i think owning detached as your first house is just unreasonable in this time in history.

Less than that, probably closer to 2500. People can save 100k in 5 years if they aren't stupid about it, and plenty people I know who are under 30 have.

The idiots dominate the headlines but the normal folk continue with life. My friend's sister is a nurse and she's 29 this year, she afforded to buy on her own 4 years ago, single income. She decided that she doesn't need a car and will survive with just a bus pass.

Dude, did you miss the part where I mentioned "living with parents"? Yes, it is not ideal, but "free" is "free" -- I am writing that in quotes bcos back in my time, I still took care of a lot of house bills while I was living with my parents.

If that is really not viable, what's wrong with having a roomate(s)? I did that too for a few years, and it was a really enjoyable time. Those guys are my family away from home, and we are still in frequent contact.

I don't necessarily think of "compromise" as being a bad thing. Since resources are always in a limited supply, every choice we make is already a compromise. And most importantly, compromise isn't the same thing as a downgrade. Say I choose to live in Tsawwassen. It's further away, and I gotta put up with the Messy Tunnel. But I get a bigger house on a bigger lot at $1.5M instead of $2.5M with a lower density community. If the favourable qualities are what you are after, then the compromise is anything but a downgrade.

And yes, purchasing a detached is totally impractical, unnecessary, and maybe even undesirable as a first home in this time and location in history. Your time and money can be better spent on other things.

OK, but add property tax and condo fees and you start to almost hit $3k if you can find a condo for 500k and put 20% down. The average household income in B.C. is $108.6k...they wouldn't even qualify for a condo at this price.
