Is it 2001 again? Aka, why do I want undercar lighting thread.

So back in the day we used to partake in the practice of "ricing out" our cars. Like automotive peacocks, we would ordain our daily drivers with lights and wings and canards in an effort to impress the female population. The problem is, all we would attract was other male automotive enthusiasts. This was not what we expected...

Fast forward to 2019 and I would like to revisit undercar lighting. Neon strips were a pain in the ass. They would break, wiring was weak and unreliable, yet we persevered for the sake of looking like we were hovering on a cloud of blue light. Today we have LED technology. Wiring is simple, the lights are robust, and we can change colors with a phone app. It truly is the best time to be alive.

Am I nuts for wanting this?
Please tell me I'm not the only one who wants to light up the night :lol

The thirst has always been real for me and underglow. It was the first thing I wanted when I bought my ITR in 2003 and although I moved away from that kind of modding, the desire for it never went away. There are SO many options for glow status with LED technology and it seems endless where you can put the lights since they are so small. Like fender puddle lights for off-road maintenance when you're in the bush, door puddle lights to make your Corolla look like an exotic, interior lights, trunk lights, etc. It's endless.

No, you are not crazy. Get Berz in here. He'd be all over it. Ricers unite!!

Been considering lighting up the ruckus for S&G but think I’ll leave my car alone :lol

You are open to attracting other male automotive enthusiasts again?

You're going to get a VI with or without the lights so why not attract a bunch of random dudes for when you're pulled over.

originalhypa 01-22-2019 02:54 PM

:lol
Dicks.

I made a few friends over the years thanks to my cars. Picked up a few chicks thanks to the cars too, but they didn't stick around for long.

Regarding VI's, you would have to be smart about this. Switched power, and treated just like your cell phone. If you're going to mess with them while driving, be aware of who is watching.

Like Doc Martens, it's time to bring this back.
Kits are cheap online. I'm going to order one and install it along with some wheel well lighting.

I'm going to be adding puddle/rock lights to my Jeep, I've been wanting to add underglow to my GTFour for ages (hell I even have two kits in my basement) because apparently I'm still a ricer at heart and gold wheels with red mudflaps just aren't flashy enough on their own. I imagine it'll get smashed to shit by snow/ice/rocks though so I might have to make it easily removable.

I rather see under glow lights than have people turn on their high beams 24/7.

Berzerker 01-22-2019 04:16 PM

I have underglow on my element. It's so fucking easy now! No wires even need to go into the cockpit. No wiring through fire wall. Just attach the control module under the hood and run all the wires on the exterior. Use the supplied remote or control it with your phone. Not to mention how low profile the LED strips are compared to those fat tubes we used to have to fuck with.
You can get ebay kits for like $30 so let me ask you this.... Why the fuck not???

I have a kit on my Element and one in my fiberglass trailer so I can make them both glow!

Berz out.

When we all got our cars in grade 12 we all talked so much shit about how we'd all get matching underglow for our "crew."
Fuck we were cool. The $180 for the kit was no problem, but fuck all that wiring shit. I might as well have tried to build a space shuttle. The plan died back in 2002, just like my hopes and dreams. Is it finally time to live what I couldn't back then?

While I love the pachinko parlour look of downtown Tokyo, I'm not a huge fan of idiots with lights. Poorly aimed headlights, mis-colored lights, clear or tinted tails, or my most hated of all, blown lights.

This would have to be done in a mature fashion with proper aiming, power switches, and a user who is self aware.
