Brakes!

alright...so the RDX front brakes are down to 3mm.

Rather than support the local stealership, i'll be doing them myself.

OEM acura pads $89 for fronts. 45022-TX4-305

Now - i've done front brembos on a TL-S and rear on a 06 civic but it's been a few years.

I don't expect this to be difficult at all.

Question: what would be the best tool to compress the pistons? I expect to find a single piston (not dual) for the RDX. On the 2 above changes, I used a long metal file which seemed to work but i seemed to have lost that.

C-Clamp?

Thanks.

I have a big C clamp for brakes, but make sure they aren't the ones you have to twist. I spent far longer than I care to admit trying to retract the calipers on my RX7 before I found out you just turn them in.

If it's fairly new and in good shape you might just be able to push them in by hand, that's what I did on the inlaws Rav4.

Front brakes done....but when I look at the old pads...I dunno...seems like I had a few months of life left? I’m thinking stealership was trying to get more cash out of me when it was in for the B1 service.

Single piston

This 8.99 cdn tire tool was perfect for piston compression.

Old vs new. According to Stealership I was down to 3mm

Driver side :

Passenger side

How many km were on the old pads? Looks like they still have ~25% left.

If I saw that during summer tire swap, I would've left them til I had to put the winters back on.

I'd check them again in the fall but if 83k used up 75% of the pad I'd figure they're good for another 10-15k easy. Are the squealer bits not a thing anymore? It used to be pretty obvious when you had a few months of pad left.

You still had at least 6 months left on those pads. I use Channel Lock to compress my pistons.

Berz out.

yah this was a result of me sittin' at home minding my own business while the dealer had my car for a 'type b1' service which involves oil change, tire rotation and brake servicing and more ripoff inspections.

They called me almost in a panic.. "hi, your fronts are 3mm...we really must insist they get changed out ..this is considered in the red.. the backs are 5mm but we can do a package for all at $800"... i'm like.. "stfu jack.. do them myself!". of course I wasn't there to see the actual state of the existing pads.

so purchased the fronts...and already had the shit apart so just went ahead and replaced them. was a good experience since I never done them on the RDX.

They weren't that expensive and now you know who to trust.
