Disney + launching who is getting it

Disney + launch today! Price is 9.99 seems pretty decent in terms or pricing and content. Who is going to get it?

Already got it and watched 1st episode of Mandalorian last night. Mine says $8.99/month not $9.99?

Anyway probably dumping Netflix any second now.

MarkyMark 11-12-2019 10:23 AM

I'll probably end up getting it, but I'll keep Netflix as well. That's where I draw the line though, fuck you Apple I'm not buying your shit.

nabs 11-12-2019 10:39 AM

gonna wait a week or so for all the crashes and bugs to be fixed, I'll have more time over the winter break too to check it out.

Manic! 11-12-2019 11:06 AM

All these streaming services are bullshit.

Mikoyan 11-12-2019 01:28 PM

Disney is playing the old 4:3 ratio Simpsons episodes by cropping it to 16:9, so you lose some of the visual gags.

Probably done because people don't like the vertical letterboxing.

True. But traditional tv is also BS. Pay a bundle and then they still want to serve up 30% of time as ads.

Given the choice I’d rather pay the same amount for a collection of streaming services than ad-based tv.

Funny how things have evolved. Companies like Netflix came in and aggregated a lot of shows. Now that they (and others) are content producers it’s leading to more segmentation than ever.

highfive 11-12-2019 01:42 PM

Remember to buy it through Rakuten! $12.50 cash back!!!

I just split netflix with a few friends... enough for me.
Don't want to subscribe to 3-4 services and then be back where where i was when i was paying for cable.

Hondaracer 11-12-2019 01:52 PM

Got the Apple TV service free for a year when I got my new phone, it’s alright but I wouldn’t pay for it.

How long before they crack down on password sharing?

unit 11-12-2019 01:56 PM

i think sharing with non family members is against their policy but they have had tons of time and opportunities to crack down on it and still haven't done so. if they do, then i'll just cut it... less tv watching is a good thing.

320icar 11-12-2019 02:34 PM

I could not give less of a fuck.

Everything has a subscription. It’s completely ruined what made Netflix so popular in the first place

SkinnyPupp 11-12-2019 03:14 PM

I don't think it's launched here, there's just a page in Chinese with a way (I think) to sign up for email updates. I just hope that when it does launch, the page is not 100% chinese like it is right now. If it is I'll have to pirate their shows I want to watch

StylinRed 11-12-2019 04:21 PM

I've been using it last night, and the app for the firestick, is riddled with bugs (crashing, freezing, etc) and the full library isn't browsable, even when you set it to "all movies A-Z" (it only goes up to C then stops) you have to search for your title manually

And the subtitle/audio options are horrible, especially on new, original content, unlike netflix/Amazon Prime, where there is, or almost is, every major language available, + only has French, Spanish, Nordic countries (feels like I went back in time to the age of DVD regions)

Think I'll make use of the free week preview, then cancel, until they get their shit together

IIRC, they said they were only launching it in the US, Canada, and the Netherlands today.

Mikoyan 11-12-2019 07:26 PM

Ran fine with the Disney+ app on my sony tv. 4k and Dolby sound was fine. It also cast from my Android phone to my Chromecast for a full movie fine as well.

Hopefully some of these streaming services condense into a few options and we can get back to high-value, reasonably-priced content. Cable is ridiculously expensive because so many people bailed on it and, with everyone splitting up content amongst the streaming services, it’s getting to a point where streaming is getting too expensive.

I think I’m going to start cycling streaming services every few months, maybe 2 at a time.

SkinnyPupp 11-12-2019 08:37 PM

Thing about streaming is, you can probably pick one or two services, and be fully satisfied with all the TV you could want. $20-30 a month is still way less than any cable package.

Add to that all the other advantages - video on demand, no commercials, and most importantly the ability to cancel and start whenever you want. Sub to Disney for a bit to watch Mandalorian, then cancel. Sub to CBS for a while to watch Star Trek Picard, then cancel. Sub to HBO Go for a bit to watch Game of Thrones, then cancel. Sub to WWE to watch Wrestlemania, then cancel. Et cetera. Add in a 'permanent' sub to Netflix or whatever else you like. You'd probably never be subscribed to more than 1 or 2 networks in a month, paying WAY less than you would for shitty cable TV.

There will definitely a point where it's too much, but I don't think we're there now. I definitely don't think it's worth complaining about yet. Like TV is TOO AWESOME so it's something to complain about?

You cant cut the cable cord if you wanna watch sports. I dont like searching virus laggy streams. TSN and sportnet has 15 channels covering all the major sports including formula 1

Hondaracer 11-12-2019 09:09 PM

Sports is the only reason I still have cable. It’s virtually impossible to get a decent stream you actually want to watch.

It’s unfortunate you need to get into the basic packages + + in order to get the channels you need.

yttv is a nice service with TSN etc and no commercials for formula 1 races!

But yttv is too expensive @ $50usd a month
Though I like their UI and pvr far more than Shaws offerings

All major sports have their own streaming. MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL, even F1. It's not that cheap, NFL is like $250 USD for a season, although if you VPN through India it's half that lol (you don't have to watch via VPN, only subscribe)
