I live in the 4th largest city of a country where nobody has proper fucking health insurance and people are treating it like its time for a country fucking jamboree. Either its bumping into meth-head Mary at the grocery because she doesn't know how to fucking socially distance, or its my neighbours pounding out some hot jam oompa-loompa Tejano music because its time for their weekly Tuesday night party.

I had a job offer lined up which I signed several weeks back and have one foot in the door, but because of the current situation, they had to reassess their workforce first and I still don't have a confirmed start date yet.

I was just notified they're done with layoffs now and can proceed, but they're going to temporarily have salary paycuts across the board for 3 months, including mine. Is there any insurance they will honor this time line or should I request this in writing or what?

Obviously my biggest concern now is they're going to run with this new salary indefinitely once I jump ship.

Anyone working from home with a younger child? How are you doing it?

It's like working 2 Full time jobs at the same time. I didn't realize it, but 3 weeks in, I am losing my mind. My wife still goes to work, so I am here attending meetings, training, setting up and monitoring a 5 year old's Zoom meeting, homework, a billion random questions, breakfast, lunch......I can't focus for longer than 10 minutes.

hi-revs 04-07-2020 02:52 PM

^^ wife and I both WFH right now and we've pulled out 18 month old out of daycare.
Luckily we live with my FIL, so he can help watch while we're working. But even then it's tough trying to hide from her etc.
Definitely not easy even WITH help.

Been dieting for 3 weeks, down 10 lbs

I would fucking CRUSH that cake right now PogChamp

You got your piece, gimme the rest!

Hondaracer 04-07-2020 03:06 PM

Lol anytime we bake try to give some away to neighbours etc because otherwise we’d just eat it all over the week. Olive oil cake with a vanilla buttercream. Have always had a soft spot for the legit buttercream cakes. Hate that phony tasting icing places like save on etc use

underscore 04-07-2020 03:14 PM

Post-quarantine cake meet at Hondaracers place?

Traum 04-07-2020 03:33 PM

For myself, it cannot be done. One person needs to be supervising or at least keeping an eye on the younger child(ren). At best, you can ask your child(ren) to go play by himself and it might last 10 min. But they'll come back wanting / needing attention one way or another.

The totally unacceptable way is to just stick your kid in front of a screen. Then they can probably go on for hours. But I can't possibly let myself do that.

I actually took my car off insurance and unplugged the terminal / connection from the battery. Falk it felt great getting the refund from ICBC. (Been laid off for 5 months, so anything helps)

Flak i feel for you man... MUST be tough. Guess you have to talk to HR on "contract should state the reduced amount as well as when they will consider this to normalize and put be back on new salary." Sorry to hear man.

I thought about doing it, but my car is a lease so taking off insurance is a hassle. And I might go insane being stuck with only the babymobile.

Been trying to make up excuses to go for drives long enough to warm up the cars properly.

So with the pizza I used a sourdough recipe because I’m currently feeding a starter but just use any decent dough that rises

The trick I’ve found with this one (and people debate this but I had great results) I use the burners and start warming the cast iron quite low, below medium/low. Then douse it in olive oil and pull it off the burner hot. Quickly toss your dough into the pan and stretch it out, create your crust etc. You can then put together the pizza in the pan, put it back on the burner on low/medium and let the bottom of the crust brown and bake a little

Then toss it into the over the hottest your oven will go, 15-25 minute later dough should have risen and baked nicely and you’ve got that killer crispy golden bottom

Edit* obviously preheat the oven before doing the cast iron in the burner so it’s ready when you need to toss it in

Happy brithday, Hondaracer!

I've been contemplating making pizza all weekend, I think you've motivated me to attempt it. I've never tried from scratch before. haha

Matsuda 04-07-2020 08:34 PM

I made no yeast pizza the other night with my daughter (couldn't find yeast anywhere...even there). Next day made baked chicken mac and cheese

My sourdough starter isn’t strong enough to rise too much on its own so I also used a tsp of yeast. The rise should be almost double the initial dough to make it nice and airy once baked

Posting this in the case it helps other people stay focused in these times. I have been working from home for about about 5 years and found listening to music playlist can be extremely distracting. Whenever a song changes it causes your brain to bring up some memory or thought, I tried listening to the same songs on repeat which still had the distraction of the start/end of songs being slow/having parts that pull your focus out of what your doing. I ended up starting to create forever loopable versions of my favorite songs to get me pumped for certain situations or just code my face off all day. I try to make all songs when possible to have little to no noticeable change in beat when the track restarts. I created a YouTube channel where I post video versions of all the songs to play in the background, video descriptions have links to download all the songs. Here is the channel, hope it helps :)
