Getting Old

I was going to title this thread, "Growing Old," but for some reason, "growing," doesn't make sense to me.

Anyhow, this is a thread for the older people of RS to post their experiences. An excuse to B!tch and complain about how crappy it is to get old, so to speak.

Also, an opportunity to field questions from the younger folk on RS.

Old isn't fun, but it isn't all that bad. There are positives, though not many.

Most of my friends are cranky bastards and you can't blame them. I'm definitely not one of them. Life has too much to offer and being cranky doesn't do anybody any good.

I know most of you RS members are getting on in age. Some insight into what to look forward to, hee hee, hue hue, pew pew. Without getting too depressing.

Middle aged members, who I believe are in the majority here are starting to think about the years ahead. Looking back and saying, "Shit.........." you fill it in.

I think that's just me. 16 years living in DTES, the Cold War, and a few other things that contributed to my habits.

"The war is over, Mom."
When she's saved random shit for 20 years and is never going to use them.

Cons of getting older:
- I can't lift heavy stuff like I used to. Not really noticeable around people younger than me, cause most of them are giant pussies.
- I can't recover from drinking as quickly but it also takes a lot more to get me drunk (which is super rare anyways)
- Time's a tickin'
- More funerals

Pros:
- I legit don't give a fuck about a lot of things that I used to. Priorities.
- I value time a lot more.
- It's easy to see who matters and who doesn't.
- I can say inappropriate shit and people will just chalk it up to me being older and ignorant.
- The car parts I've hung on to for the last 20 years are actually worth a ton now lol
- My tool collection is fairly complete and if I don't have it, I know another boomer that does

I’m like the complete opposite for drinking. I get drunk way quicker but can handle more booze without an issue compared to 10 years ago.

I recover from workouts much more slowly, and I get injured more easily. It's also a lot harder to get leaner, even with hard dieting. 6 pack is out of the question for me now, it's the 4 pack life for me (once I start dieting )

Funniest thing is when you have to verify your age. I’m looking for Zippo lighter inserts. The websites require you to put in your birthdate. Not that they’ll know if you’re telling the truth........ okay, there’s up to 31 days in a month, 12 months in a year, but years. Goddamnit, I fell asleep scrolling all the way down to the early to mid 50’s

They say your hearing and your eyesight goes first. Not with me. My hearing is good and I can spot a hottie around corners and then some. The thing that has gone completely downhill are my teeth. I used to open bottles with them. Now they are brittle as hell. It’s all coming apart. My pension is all going to fixing my damn teeth. Time for dentures.

Im only 34 and I'm relating to the older folks when I was in my teens. Rainy days we'd find underground parking lots to skateboard in and people would yell at us and we'd have the fuck you you old fuck attitude. Now kids come into my buildings visitor section of our underground parkade, the area before the gate, and I want to yell at the pricks for making so much noise when their wheels hit the floor and the board tumbles over and over from never being able to land a single trick.

So how old are you all when saying you're old? 30s? 40s?

We moved a couple of months ago. Some old neighbours asked us if we were going to do the move ourselves. My wife and I both looked at each other, a bit dumbfounded at the question, and said, "No, we hired movers and are renting boxes to pack up our things".

Doing a move on your own is when you're in your 20s and early 30s when you're broke and have no kids. You know when you're old when you have too much crap, nice furniture, etc. and have to hire movers.

I'm turning the big 40 next year. I still look like i'm in my late 20's or early 30's, thank god for asian genes. Body aches a lot more and recovery from work outs is longer. Have to stretch before and after sports. My cardio is also shit now, no matter what I do. I forget things sometimes. I'm still a total kid at heart. Love playing my video games, hanging out with friends and doing stupid stuff, that will never change, no matter how old I get LOL

That's the secret.......... think young.

Have fun and stay positive,

An old colleague/friend of mine (female), who is French-Canadian always said, "I want to find a penis."

A Penis = Happiness, gulolol.

I think most people forget that once you get married and have a family, it doesn't mean you have to give up the things that you love to do on your own time. You just have less time to do it. Balancing everything is the key to getting older. I have many friends that have given up on sports, video games, car, music etc.. because they said that they don't have enough time to do it.

I tell them that's BS because unless you're working and then going directly to sleep, you have time, you just need to allocate it better.

I still feel like I'm in my teens/20s and it just seems like everyone around me is aging

My friend just moved and I was fully expecting to help him move, but he called movers, and I was like wtf?

Guess it helps that my gf atm is in her early 20s, I travel, and I've got no kids

I didn't start to feel old until 39 or so last year. I was the fittest of my life at 36-38, and then I got injured (hip and then shoulder), and I couldn't get close to the same shape despite similar diet after. And then when covid hit I went straight into DGAF and am paying for it now

Also my face hasn't really aged, I always had kind of a babyface, but I can feel some changes coming in, under my eyes mostly. A few grey hairs on my sides and in my beard. My vision, hearing, etc are all fine. Still perfect vision

Another thing that's changed is not being able to withstand the cold. In my younger days, I would sleep in the raw with the windows wide open in the dead of winter, shovel snow in my shorts and T-Shirt. Now I have to have the heat inside the house cranked up. I can no longer work in the garage in the winter or after hours. So sad..........

oh grey hairs! I've got sooo many greys, but I was going grey in my teens so that never made me feel weird

But grey chest hairs and pubes that's new, and kind of disconcerting

And being cold is definitely a thing too, I used to go out in a tshirt n shorts when it was -10, just a few years ago even, but now I'm in a sweater, and jacket and it's 15 degrees out
