I think it's the opposite, actually doing the pedal bike thing is a boomer thing. Everyone who picked up their child at daycare was using some sort of e-bike whereas I was the only one who was pedaling like a pleb.

baby is coming in 2 weeks. Looking for an entry level 2nd hand DSLR and maybe 1 lens to take pics? I'll pick something up on FB marketplace.

ugh.. i guess i can spend 500 bucks on a shit camera than wife wanting to spend 2k on baby pics.

Canon / Nikon - going to shoot all automatic and just typical close by of kids... any one has any suggestions? (guess it's 99% lens is what's l'm looking hoping to seek help on).

Don't need stuff so big like the C70 or D6 lol.

I have a Nikon D7200 with a 18-200mm lens that I am thinking of getting rid of. If you are interested I can talk to my wife to see what she says. We haven't taken it out for a few years. Last we used it was 2022 I think. It has a low shutter count as I'm not one to just haul it around to take pictures.

Skip DSLR, go mirrorless. More likely you'll take it out and actually use it.

What's your scenario for using a dedicated camera over a cellphone to take photos? The workflow to get a camera out for photos is so clunky compared to quickly pulling your phone out of your pocket and snapping pics immediately.

Eons ago when we had our baby, the hospital had a resident newborn photographer right there at the hospital that we hired. Don't remember how much her services cost, but if money isn't tight, I'd recommend you to just go for that.

They (the newborns) come out looking extra puffy bcos of the fluid buildup, and they'll never get that same look anymore. (They'll lose that water over the next few days.) So IMO, you might as well get those newborn photos done. In fact, they basically look a little different every single day, so just keep shooting tons and tons of pictures.

Whichever camera you end up getting, IMO you'd want to make sure that it is capable of producing good photos at high ISO. I didn't want to use the flash on the baby, and to get decent pics, I needed to shoot at around iso12800.

Have fun and enjoy the month-long sleep deprivation journey LOL~

Good luck with this. I've tried this line of reasoning with my wife many times and she never accepts it. She can't allow me to "waste the money" on the camera and at the same time, constantly sad that we didn't go out to do ______ photos that would've cost so many times more .

Baby pics don't need to cost $2k - you can find someone for $400-600 to do some good work (work that's way better than anything you can do). For example: https://www.monairedale.com/vancouve...rapher-prices/ (this is the wife of a former co-worker) - newborn sessions starting at $375.

I personally would just make sure my phone is a pretty new one as the phone cameras are fantastic now and then hire a pro for a short session. I remain forever annoyed that my wife wouldn't upgrade her phone when our daughter was born so the pics she took were all kinda shit.

im actually in the market for a dirt cheap dslr too. im using it just to scan film with, so it doesnt have to be anything newer as long as its newer than my wifes 2008 canon XS which is only 10mp.
i want something that's at least 18mp which is the generation of canon dslrs after that.

a good bargain is the canon sl1 which people only want about $200 for. a 50mm and something like an 18-135mm should only set you back about another $200.
i think its the best deal in cheap dslrs right now. everything newer people want 350-400 for the body or kit only.

sl1 and a decent lens will take lots of great photos of your kid, you don't need to spend that much more

On that note, here's an unsolicited list of suggestions for helpful stuff, off the top of my head:

1) Tracking app (for feeding / diapering / sleeping):
Huckleberry (you only have to pay if you go to Premium). Works good.

(i don't think you'll need to start tracking their sleep til a few months later, but definitely at least diaper tracking is needed from day 1)

2) Sterilizer (for bottles, pump parts etc)

Huge time/energy saver vs boiling stuff manually like we did for a while.

We got the Philips Avent with the drying function, no complaints.

3) Bottle warmer

We got the Philips Avent, no complaints.

4) Burp cloths

You drape these things over your chest, so that your kid doesn't leave puked up milk on your shirt all the time.

We liked these ones, because they're nice and thick. The other ones i've tried just soak right through.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0D9M27X1Q?...n_title_1&th=1

5) Bibs [for a little later... needed starting maybe around 6 m/o]

Copper Pearl

These ones are a bit pricier than usual, but they don't seem to soak through to our kids' shirts like the other ones we use:

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B075KMPQLJ?...d_asin_title_1

6) White noise
Just use an old phone; don't have to spend any money. FYI iPhones have it built in to iOS for free: Accessibility / Audio & Visual / Background Sounds

Both our kids said fuck you to the bottle, money down the drain

We got luck with bibs and cloths as neither drooled or backed up much.

We have sound machines, but found air purifiers works just as well with the benefit of purifying the air in the room and getting some air movement so it doesn't get as stuffy. It also helps block out noises so we can turn the TV up a bit in the living room while the kids slept.

RE the DSLR, we used it extensively with the first kid because we had the extra hands to deal with it. The second kid came along and it's just been sitting. We've been on 3 trips and we didn't bring it. What did get use was the tripod as we stuck a phone mount on. Like what other's said the phone gets like 80% of the way there. Unless you have a discerning eye or are into photography, the DSLR is kind of a waste of money. We didn't buy the DSLR for the kid though as we had it before hand for traveling.

Ok true enough 6760934980348304: you totally don't have to buy this stuff until you find out you need it .

Oh on diaper pails: the best so far has been the Ubbi. It does a way better job at sealing in the stench than two other ones we tried.

We tried bottle warmers. Just went back to hot water baths for bottles. Faster and easier. We used the Tommee Tippee lid/can from the travel thermos set at home and going out.

If you can, get the kid used to a bottle early, so you have the option of bottle feeding easier later on.

Our kids decided on not using a potty or those inserts that sit on the toilet seat.

They decided to sit on the adult seat and hang on for dear life while learning to go.

We ended up with 4-5 unused potty/travel inserts.

The Ubbi is awesome, totally worth the money (you can resell it later anyways). Make sure to use the Ubbi bags too.

Funny how you find the SL1 to be decent, bcos I have one and I think the image quality is crap LOL~

But it is ultra portable, and bcos of that, I actually end up using it for daily stuff more than I do with my fancier dSLRs.

Lol got one when I had my 1st born back in 2014 that I barely used. I don't know shit about cameras but if you're interested I can find it tomorrow and let you know what it is. I know it's a Canon, comes with a bag and 2 lenses and in mint condition. It's a rebel I think.
