What's everyone's opinion on bringing a 3 year old to monster trucks?
I shake my head at this the same way I did when I went to see Snoop Dogg and the family next to me had their pre-teens with them (there was a tonne of weed smoke). | I don't have a problem with it from my own personal experience of taking my kid when he was 4 years old. It was a family friendly event, lots of parents with kids, nothing rowdy at all, this was 7 years ago. It was loud but not stupid loud, son had ear protection and didn't whine. YMMV of course.

It was a family event when I went a decade or so ago, but it was stupidly loud indoors even with ear plugs.

Recently got an iPad for my son as his Amazon Fire 7 Kids just wasn't cutting it anymore. Since no one at home is an Apple user the kids account thing became a bit of challenge as there was no way to administer it (I am looking at getting the MacBook Neo for that)
In the meantime, I've setup NextDNS to filter out ads and unsavoury websites. Seems to be somewhat legit and we don't really have anything to steal. Quick check it does seem to work and it can enforce safe search and filtering, and will allow you to block Social Media, porn, etc etc. It also features a parental lock so the kids can't purposely or accidentally disable it. For the time being it'll do. It's free and allows 300k requests a month which should be sufficient.

One alternative for parents who have kids and are allowing them to use connected devices is CIRA's free family-oriented DNS servers which are free. My caveat is that I have not tested it so I don't know what its capabilities are. My suspicion is that it may not filter out social media sites, but I could be wrong.
It appears they have iOS and Android-specific apps to be downloaded on a per-device basis to maintain your control. Use at your own discretion and risk. https://www.cira.ca/en/canadian-shield/

Actually, it notifies me for approval for each new website or new app and blocks it by default. I currently have google search disabled so she can only visit the education websites that her teacher sent her for reading/math.
I'm guessing iPad may have similar functionality, but Chromebooks can be had for cheap and we have multiple profiles set up so that the Duet is my primary device when we travel since it uses a desktop browser instead of a mobile/tablet one, and is way smaller than a laptop to carry.
[EDIT]This one when it was on sale for $349 https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product...b-ram/19182250

apple wants you to integrate into their other products.
recently my 20 month old is refusing to sit in her carseat. usually takes about 5 minutes or more each time before she even wants to sit in. i usually have to bribe her with snacks before she sits her ass down. sometimes she doesn't even want the snack.
any other way i can get her to sit down instead of snacks each time or forcing her down and strap her in. its a huge struggle each time.

Incoming rant about the state of parenting these days...
My kids have been Girl Guides for several years, but they're starting to age out of the program. They have frequently complained about disruption by other kids in their meetings, but I didn't really understand until we had a couple of their peers over the other day. My wife is a volunteer with my daughters' local group and she recently hosted a meeting of other parent volunteers who brought over their kids to our house.
My kids hosted these kids in our basement and my kids were pretty upset afterwards because these other kids wouldn't listen and respect the space. They threw popcorn all over our floor and didn't pick up after themselves. One of the parents mentioned to my wife during the meeting that she wasn't able to wash her hair one day because her daughter, one of the disruptive ones who was over at our house, demanded to her mom that she wanted to colour her hair purple. So this parent had to drop what she wanted to do, which was wash her hair, and colour her daughter's hair.
I've been a father for over a decade and over that time, I seldom see fathers on their own in the wild with their kids. Whether it's the mall, restaurants, running errands, etc. My wife recently took a vacation for a few days and other people asked me if I had an issue with managing on my own. I said, "No, my kids listen to me." My kids are not perfect, but they're respectful people. They're self-regulated and understand social situations. They behave when in public. We have structure at home, but my wife and I are not old-school immigrant tiger parents. But, I feel that generally, we've lost the plot when it comes to parenting and the proof is in the pudding. Kids have higher rates of anxiety. Gen-Z can't find jobs and lack social skills.

Our kids have everything they need and they know that we love them. But, when I reflect on some of the choices we've made over the years, as parents, we would be judged very harshly for those decisions. I don't care anymore because each day, my kids make me proud of the people they've become and continue to be.
For example:
- We made our kids sleep in their cribs in their own rooms during the first week as babies.
- We sleep-trained them when they were just a few months old.
- We toilet trained them before the age of 3 over a weekend by fencing them in the kitchen (the so called 3-day or weekend method).
- We got by on just "average" baby gear (no Uppababy gear here) and we have bought our toddler clothes from places like Superstore or Walmart over the years.
I could go on.
The part of the routine that I'm most proud about is that I read to each of my kids every night from the time they were babies until they were about 5 or 6. That is the best thing I've done as a father as they learned to read and write a bit earlier than other kids and reading comprehension comes easy to them today.

My quick-to-judge mind immediately thought of 2 things:
1) does the kid have any special needs / developmental issues?
2) is it a parenting issue where the parents failed to established the necessary rules, boundaries, and etiquette that kids should generally learn?
The 2nd thing that came to mind is -- you mentioned your girls are starting to age out of the (girl guides) program. Are they only aging out of their age range branch? or are they actually aging out of the whole girl guides program, meaning they are approaching 17+?
It seems to me that becoming 17+ is unlikely, since by that age, they are unlikely to go to some boring volunteer meeting with their parents, not to mention throwing popcorn on the floor and didn't pick up after themselves.

Time to bring your kids out to the Stock & Noob Meet. I know some girls (some are now moms) who come out to car meets and the reason they do is because they grew up going to car meets with their dads. I love seeing a car enthusiasts drive into the sunset with the convertible top down and their daughter riding by their side.

These kids don't have special needs, as far as I know. These aren't the only kids that have issues in my daughter's girl guide group.
With Girl Guides, you tend to age out or continue on around the age of 9 or 10. Once kids are in the school system, they learn how to self-regulate and be respectful of people and spaces that are not your home...or at least, that's how it was in the old days for the vast majority of kids.

Internet wins.
Average baby gear is also meh. Wife "needs" travel stroller and "needs" uppababy. Never going to win that fight.
Props to you in having your wife on the same page as you.
My wife is frugal on stuff and all of our cloths are hand me down from church friends but when she wants something.. it's a hefty price tag.
