Regardless of what industry you are in, you should get paid the 8 hours on your stat holiday (assuming hourly employee, 40h per week etc). Then if you work that day, it’s considered overtime, which is 1.5x pay. So for BC day I had to work, so I was 2.5x pay

Federal government employee here. This is great news. I have October 1st as an approved day off too. Four day long weekend for me.

Stat holiday aside, September 30th is a day for our nation to reflect on how Canada can do better going forward. I have many First Nations colleagues in the federal government department that I work with.

I stand with them in honouring First Nations, the Inuit and Metis survivors.

Canada has to do better!

Maybe some of us Canadians think that Canada is better than the United States in terms of social issues, relations between people of different cultural backgrounds. You might be even say that some Canadians look at the U.S. in a condescending manner in terms of they way the Americans are dealing with systemic racism in their communities, government, armed forces, and policing.

Is Canada that much different than the US? Sure, we have different gun control laws in Canada compared the U.S. We may not see police killing black people here like George Floyd, etc.

The numerous findings of unmarked graves in residential schools across our country remind us of our dark legacy of racism, and disgusting abuse and murder of First Nations people by our government and the Catholic Church.

I hope that some Canadians, including me, take some time on September 30th to reflect on how our country can do better. Are there concrete steps that Canadians can take to learn more, get educated about the history of First Nations in Canada? Are there organizations that we can support financially to help Indigenous People?

We cannot do anything now to bring back the lives lost of First Nations children and adults during their horrific treatment at residential schools.

Going forward, do Canadians and all levels of government have the will to do something to make Canada a truly welcoming nation for all people, especially Canadians with a First Nations background?

Yes but BC Day is a provincial stat, this new holiday is a Federal stat.

Federal stats are not automatically adopted as provincial stats. Therefore as of right now unless you are in a federally regulated industry you get nothing for this new stat.

Like Easter right? Govt employees get both Good Friday and Easter off well most the rest of us only get Good Friday off.

I work for a private company, I'm lucky enough they'll give us both something started by my old manager mainly because I think he wanted a 4 day weekend to go to his cabin. It was always, come in if you want or stay home and enjoy the day off, whatever.

I’m in a federally regulated workplace. Don’t get the day off, no increase in pay but get a day off in lieau. Still not sure how they get away with that. Haha

Exactly, if you're provincially regulated and you get Easter Monday that's just your company giving you an extra perk, be it private or provincial public.

I'm not union or federally regulated but my company gives me the Easter Monday, Boxing Day, Christmas Eve (if it doesn't fall on a weekend) and even the Friday of BC Day long weekend off (although with the stipulation the offices need to stay open with a skeleton crew, so if you do end working that day you get another day off in lieu)

My wife works for provincial public sector. She gets the day off. So do all other provincial public employees.

this stat benefits more of a federal and provincial government employee or even some unions more so than regular workers retail.. restaurant..etc
plus wonder why they didn't just choose march or june since those 2.months have no holidays. you are basically putting 2 holidays in September and than Thanksgiving is nearby.

Has to do with the original orange shirt day.

https://irshdc.ubc.ca/visit/events/orangeshirtday/

It's like D-Day shouldn't be commemorated in February. Not that D-Day is a stat.

What is the significance of making it September 30? So that means September will have 2 stat holidays, why not making it October, it's just a few days later.

Then October will have 2 stats? Lol.

Basically only June is wide open for us in BC, but we also have National Aboriginal Day a non-stat on June 21st.

So flags are still flying at half-staff at government buildings. Not trying to be insensitive but how long is this going to continue? I don't think any event has ever lasted this long before even for something like 9/11.

Did people even get paid ot? It seems like everything was open as normal

Plus the funny thing is BC doesn't recognize it as a holiday even though the graves are here, none of the provinces that have graves recognize it

Turd took his family to Tofino on the September 30th stat holiday.

-not sitting well at all with many Indigenous leaders.

https://www.citynews1130.com/2021/10...-relationship/

To repair the damage of that choice, Indigenous leaders and experts say Trudeau has a tough hill to climb.

Dr. Veldon Coburn with the Institute of Indigenous Research and Studies at the University of Ottawa says Trudeau has wasted his political capital and lost a lot of support in Indigenous communities.

“This has been a cumulative effect of quite a bit of disappointment over the last six years. We will get over it, we’ll get past it, but we won’t forget it,” he said.

Chief Don Tom, vice president of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, says no matter what the prime minister does moving forward, it will be hard to forget what happened on the very first day for Truth and Reconciliation.

“He wasn’t there, and he wasn’t there for us. He wasn’t standing with the children,” Chief Tom said, adding it won’t be easy to repair the broken trust, which reflects six years of not meeting expectations.

“We’ll remember this.”

Some say it will be tough for Trudeau to make this right. Coburn and Tom say communities need to finally see concrete action on issues like boil water advisories and housing, and for the government to drop court challenges with Indigenous children to begin to make things right.

The news was reporting reservations gave like single digit voter turnout and some First Nations even refuse to vote because they won’t participate in the perpetuation of colonization

So you reap what you sow I suppose.
