It's a stat, so most places will follow. I'm sure provincial and municipal governments will recognize it. It is, after all, an important reason to recognize, commemorate, reflect, etc.

Looks like it's totally up to the provinces to recognize a stat or not. Remembrance Day is not recognized in Ontario. Like WTH?
Checking with that link for BC, it looks like our province is indeed going to recognize it.

I work for a company where my CEO opens every press conference by acknowledging aboriginal land. I think there is a good chance that we'll be getting the Thursday off as well as the Friday with what the company like to call a self-care day.

I don't get the announcement thing... isn't it more insulting than anything?
It's like.. I'm willing to stand here every single day and say this is actually not my land... but I'm not going to get off it or give it back LOL

I don't know how I feel about this holiday. I guess it's good because it is a day off and stuff. But I work in retail and that September is basically our busy month, plus it's a month end...just means more work.

When push comes to shove, though............. nuff said. For thousands of years, people have fought, conquered, taken over, whathaveyou........... everywhere. The first nations people themselves fought brutal wars against each other.
We just gotta learn to coexist............ god, there I go again.
MG1 cares............
Anyway, this national day of reconciliation is not about land claims. It's about the mistreatment, to put it mildly, of children in residential schools. And the effects it had on the families who had their children taken away.

Is Costco going to close that day?

Is Costco going to close that day? | I believe Costco employees are union so if it's not written in their union contract they won't get it off.

Costco isn't a federally regulated industry, therefore they wouldn't even be required to offer time and a half pay to their employees for Sept 30.

It's in their sales pitch, that's one reason they can keep their prices down. No union fees.
Same with Walmart.

I think generally most will follow and give that day off. The day itself is too sensitive to not allow people to get it off. It's like if you have workers that are Indigenous affiliated, I think it would cause too much labor dispute grief.

Costco isn't a federally regulated industry, therefore they wouldn't even be required to offer time and a half pay to their employees for Sept 30. | Oh, I remember working at the fish processing plant. Working on the Sunday of a stat weekend got us double time, plus and extra 8 hours. You had to have worked the week before and the week after and have X number of hours for the pay period. Back in the days when salmon was plenty, the company made so much money, it didn't matter. We weren't even union. Back in the late 70's, the owner talked to the workers re: unionizing. He said no matter what the unions negotiated with the other companies, we would get the same deal. We wouldn't be out of work due to strikes, plus, we would also save money by not having to pay union fees/dues.
Back then, we were like, 'Fuck yeah!" Thinking about it now. It did kind of bug me a bit, because we profited from the sacrifices of the unionized workers. Then again, unions were powerful, greedy, and corrupt. Not really out to protect the average workers.
I remember this one girl who started shit and wanted to unionize the plant. That lasted all of ten seconds. When she first showed up for work (I remember this because I was there in the office), the first words to come out of her filthy mouth was, "Who do I have to suck to get the good jobs?" She got a job alright and was treated like everybody else. She was one of those workers who needed a union to protect them. She was a totally shitty worker. People hated working next to her. She didn't last too long at her job. I think she got a job at one of the unionized plants, gulolol.
Anyway............... thread jacking or what?

Anyway............... thread jacking or what? | My first job was working at Superstore and the pay structure was similar.
Back in those days on a stat holiday, we would get 4 hours of pay regardless if we were working and double pay on top of the hours we worked.
e.g. if I worked for 8 hours, I'd get paid 20 hours.
Then they changed it at one of union negotiations after and all the newbies missed out, but existing employees were grandfathered in.
