Canadian Pop Culture Recommendations

I've been living in the U.S. a while now and am surrounded by U.S. pop culture. Television, radio, news, all of it. We're all exposed to it.... but only the good stuff. There is a lot of down here crap that doesn't make it up there, so be grateful for that.

While I try to keep up with whats going on at home in the news, I feel I'm missing out on what will probably become cultural touchstones in Canadian pop culture. CFOX and 94.5 seem to be region-restricted, so does Global, CityTV, and CBC. I'm suspecting CTV is as well, although everyone's lineup looks very American to me. That could be just localization though.

Whats new? Whats good? TV, music, movies, whatever. Please help me keep from losing touch with my nation of origin. Any recommendations are welcome.

is Drake, Bieber, and the Weeknd considered "Canadian pop culture"?

or you thinking Nickleback, Barenaked Ladies, Sum 41?

I can't afford to come home at this point! Too expensive!

So we had a great TV catalog like Corner Gas, Call Me Fitz, Rent a Goalie and bands like the Matt Good Band, Sloan, and Hawksley Workman. Stuff you'd see and hear up there but nobody knows who the fuck they are down here. Not stuff like Beiber or Nickelback or Drake.

I'm looking for the stuff that looks and feels Canadian like when you compare an old episode of CSI with Da Vinci's Inquest and they look and feel different.

I'm looking for the new hotness. Like, Cleopatrick. Who the fuck are they? What the hell is Dear Rouge? What are The Sheepdogs? I don't get any of that. Just people who sound like they've come off The Voice: Season 58 and a thousand "Chopped and Screwed" hip hop tracks.

Netflix Canadian shows:

Schitt's Creek was pretty funny and heartwarming, binged it after they won all those Emmys. However they go out of their way in the show to hide the fact it's from Canada. But if you're from Canada you can tell by watching they're all in Canada.

Kim's Convenience, Not as funny but had to rep Asian-Canada! Was crap the way they ended it though. I even visited the store when I was in TO this summer.

Heartland - the Missus is really into horses so she started binging this show...It's sappy sprawling soap-operish family drama and is LoooOOng - 15 seasons. But don't tell her...I sorta got into it too when she put it on and I half watched it in the background.

Motive - not really not Netflix but it was on CTV a few years ago. It's filmed and set in Vancouver so it's sorta like a cross between CSI and Da Vinci's Inquest (A show I never really watched but saw bits and parts of it).

I think I've watched more Canadian TV in the past year than the rest of my life combined thanks to Netflix and COVID isolation. I think the only other scripted Canadian show I got into previously was Due South but that was decades ago.

Degrassi High and Street Cents were the most Canadian shows I watched. Aside from hockey, I probably haven't watched a truly Canadian show since then.

I always have fun when I'm watching an American show or movie, and can point out the Canadian actors by the way they talk After moving away, you really notice how strong the Canadian accent is. Although it's not really strong on the west coast, there are a few things.

^ thank you, I was starting to worry nobody would mention Letterkenny.

Murdoch Mysteries is on season 15 now. Still Standing is great for seeing small Canadian towns.

Thanks for the recommendations in this thread. Keep 'em coming. They have Letterkenny down here on Hulu which is great for the show I'd think so I hope they keep it going. TPB is on Netflix too.
Believe it or not, Heartland is actually really big here. I don't know if its the horse thing, the fact that its a very family friendly show, or that it can be safely broadcast on more Christian-oriented channels but its got a lot of 'murican fans. Haven't seen Motive so I'll check that out.

Still Standing is the kind of stuff I'd been hoping to hear about. Thanks for that!

You must be living your best life in Texas. Every single person I know, American or Canadian, that has moved to Texas in the last 15 years has went on to live their best life. I hope the same for you.

Letterkenny is No. 1 for sure. Epic show.

A surprise hit for our household is Family Law. Based in Vancouver, family law firm, female star is a recovering alcoholic. Decent current topics delivered in somewhat relatable ways. For a mainstream show it's really good. You can say "shit" on Global now? Crazy!

Going to see Letterkenny live in March

I’ll never forget how mad my buddy got at me when I called him out for having the b4-4 hairdo the day he showed up to a party with a new hairstyle

Hah, I believe it. Thing is on the surface it seems like a wholesome show. There's no swearing or sex at all, but it's implied people are constantly hooking up/cheating and getting pregnant out of wedlock. And there's a lot of subversive shit about traditional relationships in general. Tons of female empowerment but no LGBT characters - I guess it would be too obvious to the Christian right crowd. But if I was a good Christian parent who wanted my kids to watch a good Christian show it might fool someone who just watches the first few episodes.

Strangely enough Religion is never mentioned in the show (they don't even say "oh my god" either) either except for church weddings.
